(31) To the editor, Re: John Halls comments July 13/06 In his letter of July 13, John Hall gives us three examples of what he says are uncon- troversial examples of state sponsored terrorism. I would say his list is indis- putable if you only get your history from the CBC and/or Robert Fisk. To his list of Ronald Rea- gan, Richard Nixon and the pilots of bomber com- mand, Im really surprised he missed Churchill, Truman and George W., although he did allude to the fact that the latter would be there shortly. As I like to get my history from more reliable sources, (i.e. just about anywhere other than the CBC/Fisk), let me suggest some 20th Century real practioners of state sponsored terrorism. And I believe this list is truly uncontroversial. Lets begin with Adolph Hitler, John. He managed to eliminate 8-10 million Jews, Poles, Russian, the mentally and physically handicapped, homosexual, heterosexual male and female it didnt matter. If you werent going to be the perfect Aryan, too bad gonzo! And you know, John, that number could easily have been a lot higher if the air crews of bomber command had followed Noam Chom- skys stop participating theory. And in fairness, John, when you mention Dresden and Hamburg, you should really also talk of Coventry and the London blitz. How about these two for a couple of big time terror- ists Joseph Stalin and Mao. Each managed through state sponsored terrorism to elimi- nate 15-20 million of their fellow citizens. You did mention the Pol Pot, but forgot to say he was responsible for the deaths of 2-3 million of his fellow countrymen. And one would have to believe he was learn- ing how to kill long before Nixon was President. And John Hall, lets not forget the likes of Saddam Hussein, Charles Taylor, Idi Amin, and the current leaders of Sudan, and any number of post-colonial African poten- tates who managed to bank billions in Switzerland and leave hundreds of thousands of corpses behind. But you know, John, this is the one that really gets me and its still ongoing. I guess we could call it multi-state sponsored. How about all those environmentalists who, to protect a few birds eggs, conned governments into banning DDT which has led to the preventable malaria deaths of nearly 90 million Africans and Asians mostly children. And that number is still growing! Hows that for state spon- sored terrorism, John. And this list is really unarguable. Noam Chomsky is wrong. If you want to beat terrorism, fight it and fight it ruthlessly. Using diplomacy only means that the terrorist will die peacefully in his sleep. Sincerely Peter Brown, Rockwood.
