At the age of 18, he had lost his right leg to bone cancer and during his 16 months of chemotherapy treatment, he was touched by the heart- ache and suffering he saw around him in the cancer clinic. It made him stronger and more compassionate, and gave him the motivation to fight. Following the completion of his treatment, he vowed that others would find cour- age in the way he lived his life. He learned that cancer treatment in Canada was poorly funded, and he de- cide that he could make a difference. His dream was to run across Canada to raise much needed funding for cancer research and to bring the scourge of cancer out in to the open. Following months of training, Terry and his friend Doug Alward, flew to Newfoundland, an on April 20, 1980, his odyssey began. During his Marathon of Hope, Terry galvanized the country and emerged as a true Canadian Hero, he averaged 26 miles a day for 143 days, 3339 miles. Run- ning through the cold, wind, snow, rain, blazing hot sun and the traffic, often almost running him off the road. In addition to raising funds for cancer research, Terry wanted and succeeded in bringing cancer out into the open, to be more easily discussed and publicized. He also wanted and suc- ceeded in showing us all that with determination and effort, we can all accomplish so much more than ever we believe we are capable of, and when we face the kinds of obstacles he faced, we should do so with courage and conviction, believe that we can and will succeed. Sadly, as we are all so well aware, Terry was not able to complete his dream. On September 1, 1980, Terrys run was abruptly halted in Thunder Bay. His cancer had returned, and following an emotional press conference, Terry was flown home to British Columbia for treatment. Canadians across the coun- try were devastated by that news, and prayed for suc- cess in his return battle with cancer. But that was not to be. Terry died in the early morning hours of June 28, 1981, his favourite time of day, when the world was dark and still. At that mo- ment he basically passed the torch to all those here in Canada and around the world who continue to raise funds for cancer research through the annual Terry Fox Run. The Acton Terry Fox Run Sunday continues the dream.
