Family reunions and meeting of old friends was a prominent characteristic of the fair. Acton Fair was not up to Toronto Fair in some respects, of course, but some of its features were more attractive. Prohibition certainly worked its part with sat- isfaction at the fair. Not a man the worse for liquor was seen on the grounds during the two days. The 1918 fair had a new exhibit, an electrical dis- play made by the electric light department of the municipality in charge of electrician Charles Wil- son. The year 1919, a beauty contest was introduced with Mrs. J.A. Willoughby judged the Handsomest Married Lady on the grounds, while Miss Florence Murray won the Handsomest Single Lady on the grounds. In the write-up, it stated, It is hoped that prizes will be offered for the Handsomest Man at the fair next year and that lady judges will be found to decide the contest and make the award. The following year, three young ladies chose the fin- est looking and best dressed bachelor on the fair grounds between 25 and 40 years of age: Mr Jack Bell. As we look back over the past 90 years, we realize that we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to of- ficers and members of the early fairs. It was a pioneer venture and only through their unselfish devotion to the cause has the splendid organization of today been made possible. In conclu- sion, it is realized that this is far from being a complete record of the history of Acton Fair. Acton Fair has carried on through two wars, depres- sion and rainy fair days.
