LEGION NEWS BRANCH NO. 197 By Wayne Young P.R.O. NEW SIGN: The new Acton Seniors Recreation Cen - tres sign was finally put in place by Lavern Blacklock (who carved and created it), Bryan Alder and Victor Bissonnette. Julie Conroy photo Hopefully, lots of people managed to visit the Acton Seniors Centre during Open House this week. Many people admired the new sign outside. Victor Bissonnette, and Bryan Alder were in- strumental in getting Lavern Blacklock to use his talents to create the new sign, as the old one was certainly showing some wear and tear after 10 years. Lavern helps instruct wood carving at the Milton, Georgetown, and Brampton Centres, and as you can see is very talented. He also makes fishing rods, carving knives, and rough blocks carvers use during classes. If you are looking for something very worthwhile to do for a couple of hours a week we desperately need members to cover the front desk either from 9a.m.until noon or from noon until 4p.m. If you are new in town, this is a great way to meet new people. Every- one is very friendly. One of the bonuses of a small town. Our transportation list needs replenishing, too, with people who are willing to drive others to the Centre, or return them to their home after some activities. Alice Clark is the person who would love to hear from you 519-853-3723. Or simply leave a message at the front desk. There are still some peo- ple who havent picked up their latest newsletter. They are at the front desk. If you cant find yours, someone will be happy to assist you. They are filed by street ad- dress, then alphabetically by name. I was happy to see Ruth Burke in fine form after her slight mishap at Rama last week. She was busy play- ing bid euchre on Thursday afternoon. There were two mooners this week, Bernie MacMillan and Edna Nel- lis. The winners on the last Rama trip were 50/50 Stephanie Westaway, birth- day prize Ruth Burke, lucky seats June Kalachi, Ed Mc- Fadden, Martha Couture, Hilda Battison, Joe Kricfa- lusi, and Barb Hunter. The next Rama trip is Thursday, September 28. At the mo- ment it is waiting list only. There will be another evening game of euchre on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:15p.m. Make a note to come and cheer us on, or join us at the 2nd annual Rock-a-thon starting on Friday, Septem- ber 29 at 9a.m., ending at 9p.m. on Saturday, Septem- ber 30. If you would like to join us, or sponsor someone please get in touch with the Centre. There are sponsor sheets at Sobeys in the front entrance and the Centre. There will be prizes and the entertainment will certainly put us in the mood as a local D.J. has offered to provide music from the 60s and 70s, which should help keep those chairs rocking. The Legion Masters Golf Tournament was once again a great day even though it was on the damp side. A very special thank you to the BBQ crew of John McNabb, Jim Thornhill, John Arnold and Barry McNabb. Well done guys! Also thanks a lot to Dave Lewis, Al Hall, Dave Thompson, Morgan Vaters and Carl Fisker for all their help. The big winners were Jack Thibault, Brian MacDonald, Rod Leech and Chad Rowsell. Thank you very much to all who do- nated prizes for the day!! Acton Ladies Darts has started for another year with registration the first two weeks in Sept. First night of play will be Wednesday, Sept. 20. New players are always welcome. Fall Fair weekend is upon us and with it comes a busy time at the Branch. Friday night starting at 7:30 we have DJ Jesse Forrest in the games room. Saturday morning from 7-11a.m. for only $4 you can get the best breakfast in the country in the main hall. The BBQ will be frying up a storm Satur- day afternoon. On Saturday night, live entertainment by Mid Life Crisis brings the great sounds of the 50s. The Fall Fair parade steps off at 12 noon and we will meet at MSB School at 11:30. Remember, you do not need a uniform to pa- rade. The Branch is also open Sunday 12-6p.m. The shut- tle bus runs between the Legion and the fair grounds Saturday 10a.m.-6p.m. and Sunday 12-6p.m. On Sunday morning, Comrade Bob Service would like your help in sorting out the tables and chairs in the main hall which need repair and also to help clean out the main hall storage room. If you are able to help, please be at the Legion Sunday at 10a.m. Due to an increase in the per capita tax, charged to the Branch by Dominion Com- mand, the dues for 2007 have been raised to $50. FALL FAIR BOUND: Ke- nya Cargill and Cameron De Forest practise for the Fall Fair parade in their Jeep.
