16 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2006 Peewee AE Tanners defeat Fergus By Laurence Lafrance Prior to entering Sunday evenings contest against the Fergus Highland- ers, the Acton Peewee AE Tanners had played some decent hockey but had little to show for their effort. And it was perhaps a meltdown against a very talented Hespeler team on the previous day that allowed this young Tanner team to finally loosen up and take the ice in Fergus with a fresh at- titude and exact a 3-1 win. From the opening face-off it was clear that this would be a fast-tempo game and Acton showed early on that they would take their transition game to a whole new level. Fergus was determined to remain undefeated and came at the visiting team with a high- speed and focused attack. Actons defence did a good job of keeping the Fergus team on the perimeter. Netminder Justin Payne was rock solid on routine shots and nothing short of spectacular on several excellent chances including one save where, from down on his side, he threw up a blocker to deflect a sure goal over the net and keep the game scoreless. Acton rallied behind their goaltend- ing and a goalmouth scramble resulted in a goal by Josh Campbell with as- sists going to Josh Martin and Armyn Ashrafi. In the second period, Acton scored a big goal following some solid work by their defence and this time it was Billy Mowat making a pass from behind the Fergus net to a streaking Armyn Ashrafi who slid the puck under the sprawling goaltender. A short while later, Walter Kirkness sped down the right wing and, encountering a Fergus defender, fed a nifty pass to Dylan Bickers who, with his back to the net, fired a backhand shot off the post and in to give Acton a 3-0 lead. For the rest of the game, Acton bent but did not break. They killed a two man penalty and cage-wizard Justin Payne had the Fergus players shaking their heads. Fergus finally managed to solve the Acton goaltender on their 30th shot of the game but it was too little to late and Acton held on for a 3-1 victory. Actons defence of Michael Fatrdla, Josh Campbell, Andrew Lafrance, Justin Giordano, David Bickers and Billy Mowat did a fine job of limiting the Fergus players any access to the Tanner net and forwards Jonathan Pa- quin-Felske, Carter Ebbinge and Ryan Payne kept the home team off-stride with solid forechecking and pressure in all zones on the ice. Atom AE Tanners drop decision to Hespeler Shamrocks By Laurence Lafrance Following a morning bottle drive, the Atom AE Tanners travelled to Cambridge to take on the Hespeler Shamrocks but the bottle drives success didnt extend to the ice. The Shamrocks chalked up a 7-2 win. The Tanners came out fired up in the first period and Stephen White took a pass from Avery George and fired a puck up high to put Acton on the board and up 1 - 0. A short while later, Kevin Giordano, who has become known for his playmaking and setting up his linemates, scored a goal of his own with the assist coming from Drake Andrews. With a 2-0 lead, Acton ap- peared to be off to a flying start. Hespeler, however, had other plans and came back with two goals of their own in the first period to even the score. Goaltender Zack Ross did his best to keep Acton in the game but the Hespeler attack was relentless. The home team scored two more goals in the second and Acton never seemed to be able to get back on track. With three more goals in the third, the Hespeler Sham- rocks handed the Tanners their second defeat of the season 7-2. The Tanners dressing room took the defeat in stride, recognizing that they are a new team with much to learn and with many games ahead of them. The season has started off well at 3 wins and 2 losses and the lines and defensive pair- ings are beginning to come together. Atom BB Tanners win three straight defeat Elora in front of home crowd Herbal Magic Atom BB Tanners faced off against Elora on Tuesday, Oct. 17 and secured their third con- secutive win to a cheering hometown crowd. With netminder Braidyn Vidler manning the pipes, the team was pumped and ready to play. Action started just two minutes into the first when Aaron Stone scored the first Tanner goal, unassisted. Elora quickly rebounded and a scrimmage resulted in a goal, tying the game to one-all. The Tanners regained control of the puck, and Quinn Harding put a top corner goal in, assisted by Aaron Stone and Jake Corpe, for Actons lead 2-1. Forwards Bradley Bollert, Ian Thompson, Kendra Vanderyken, Jasson Lockyer, Michael Kri, and Travis Baker handled the puck well and kept the plays coming. The end of the first period saw a quick rush by defencemen Brodie MacFarlane pumping in another goal, widening the Tanner lead to 3-1. Second period play saw numer- ous penalties and reduced scoring opportunities by both the Acton and Elora squads. At the beginning of the third, Quinn Harding once again scored a top shelfer, assisted by Jake Corpe. This brought the score to 4-1 Acton. A fired- up Elora took their frustrations out with a five-minute major penalty on Acton captain Dylan Schouten. For- tunately, Dylan was unharmed and continued playing a good game. Determined defencemen Angus Agnew, Logan McNabb, Dylan Schouten and Brodie MacFarlane kept Elora at bay while McNabb scored a backhanded goal from a pass by Michael Kri, bringing it to 5-1 Tanners. With a chance in front of the net and help from Bradley Bollert, Travis Baker put one behind the Elora goalie to end the game 6-1 Acton. Goalie Braidyn Vidler did a great job making saves, including snaring a nice glove save.
