Continued from page 13 easily do this. We didnt have to truck far to each farmer so it was a better set up. Hannam has lived and worked on his family farm his entire life. His grandpar- ents bought it in 1929 and established a dairy farm. He worked on the farm and went to school, then graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the On- tario Agricultural College, now part of University of Guelph. In his fourth year at col- lege, he discovered soybeans. He saw a demonstration plot and asked his professor about them. He answered that they were a hot season crop from China, and grown in Cha- tham and Windsor but would never grow in Guelph. Well, never say never. Hannam grew a demo-plot of a cold tolerant strain developed in Sweden, and the rest is history. Woodrill Farm now grows seeds for Dekalb (Monsan- to), which then sells them to a dealer, who sells to farmers. The genetically engineered seeds self-kill, so farmers must buy new seeds from the dealer every year. Hannam says the cost of the seeds is higher, but petroleum costs are reduced, as tillage is not necessary using these Roundup? Ready seeds. Tillage is usually done to help control weeds. Instead, the crop is sprayed through- out the growing season with Monsantos biggest sell- ing pesticide, Roundup?, which kills all plants except the genetically modified soybeans. The GMO seeds contain a gene inserted from a bacterium that allows it to withstand Roundup?. Han- nam says that over two-thirds of Ontarios soybean grow- ers use these seeds. Woodrill Ltd. buys grains from farmers, processes and sells them. Hannam plans to promote the use of these grains in the automobile manufacturing industry. He says this would help stabilize agribusinesses, as Canadian buyers would have more im- pact on the price. Currently, surplus is sold at low prices on the world market. He would like to see Canadian agriculture less dependent on this market. In addition to these and many other accomplish- ments, Hannam partnered with Lammer Construction to build the Ontario AgriCentre on Stone Road in Guelph in 2004. It houses various farm and agricultural organiza- tions under one roof, located near the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food head- quarters, the University of Guelph, and Agriculture and Agrifood Canadas regional headquarters. It opened in 2005 and has 23 tenants, of which 19 are farm and rural organizations. He says, The ribbon cut in the opening ceremony was made from corn products.
