Cabbies Grab the Wiener in Boxing Day Classic The Acton Caballeros de- feated the Acton Sabres in two straight games to win the 24th annual Boxing Day Classic and take home the coveted Wiener Cup on Dec. 26 at Acton High School. Halton Hills mayor Rick Bonnette was selected MVP following the three-hour road hockey event, as his Cabbies won by scores of 7-6 and 3-0. Robert Warrington blanked the Sabres to register only the second shutout in Wiener Cup history in that second game. Ironically, both Bonnette and Warrington were longtime Sabres before being acquired by the Caballeros before the 2006 Classic. Not only do I believe in active living, but I participate as well, commented Mayor Bonnette after the Classic, played in unusually balmy weather conditions. Councillor Mike OLeary was in attendance to drop the ceremonial first ball. The Sabres fought hard in the first game of the best-of- three contest, and actually led by a score of 6-5 before the Cabbies came back to tie and then win the two-hour game on a goal by Wade Vickery. Although the Sabres were victorious for seven straight years between 1988 and 1994, the Caballeros have won the Wiener in 11 of the past 12 years. The Boxing Day Classic is an annual road hockey tradi- tion that dates back to 1983 and a number of events are being considered to mark the events 25th anniversary in 2007.
