16 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2007 HOUSE LEAGUE HOCKEY The Acton Home Hard- ware Bantam BB Tanners didnt let the Christmas holiday break spoil their game as they rang up wins over Georgetown and Cale- don. With goaltender Joey Drexler in the nets, the Tan- ners chalked up a convincing 8-3 win over Georgetown on their bailiwick to set the post-Christmas scene. Adam Amato set the pace for Acton with three goals while Ryan Faber with a pair, Brandyn McCarthy, Jamie Campbell and Dayne Black with singles account- ed for the scoring. Assists were collected by Evan McMeekin (2), Angelo Colavecchia, Adam Amato (2), Ryan Faber (2), Jamie Campbell (2), Bran- don Braga (2), Matt Allain and Matt Kutasienski (2). Nudge Caledon With Andrew Cheeseman in the Tanner nets making some tremendous saves the Tanner were able to score a 2-1 win over Caledon in their ice palace. Adam Amato and Bradley Kri scored the Acton goals with assists from Evan Mc- Meekin and Nick Eagan respectively. Acton High Schools se- nior boys basketball squad scored a 68-37 victory over their counterparts from Mil- ton District High School in a regular season game on the Acton court, Monday. However, the visitors ju- nior squad turned the tables on the Acton cagers with a 52-32 win the same day. Actons Josh Essiembre and Adam Grave led the AHS cagers in the senior tussle with 19 points each while Sahaj Petel was the leading Milton scorer with 12. Victor Thompson led the Acton scoring in the junior match with 17 points while Miltons Brandon Anderson with 13 was tops for the visitors. On January 6, the Inside Edge Pro Sports Novice BB Tanners travelled to Port Perry to compete in the annual Port Perry Predators Tournament where they won the consolation championship. An early morning game saw the young Tanners face off against the top seeded Port Hope team. Although Port Hope managed to breach Actons wall and secure five goals, the Tanners offensive lines managed to successfully fire off a barrage of shots at the Port Hope netminder only to be shut down at the goal line. Actons defensive team made it clear to their adversary that they would not go down without a battle and resident netminder Patrick Conlin stood his ground between the uprights do- ing what he could to fight off the advancing Port Hope team. Final score: Port Hope 5 Acton 0. Meet Generals In their second round-robin game, the Inside Edge Pro Sports Novice BB Tan- ners squared off against another top seeded adversary, the Oshawa Generals. The Gen- erals, coming off an early morning victory were set to run away with another victory but the young Tanners were to make it clear to the Generals that Acton could and in this game would be a league leading challenger. Another fast paced game saw the first period exchange plays fairly with the Tan- ners carving up the Oshawa zone. The first marker in this game would be placed on the scoreboard courtesy of Michael Gib- bons whose well-placed wrist shot, sunk it deep into the top shelf of the General net, thanks to the precise passing from Brendan Shannon and Neil Mowat. Although the Generals would secure their victory with two additional markers, a late third period drive by the Tanners saw resident sniper Brendan Shannon fire off a bullet which succeeded in its mission of ruffling the General netting, thanks to playmaker Neil Mowat. The final minute of the game saw Tan- ner blue overshadow General white as Oshawa pulled out all the stops in an at- tempt to shut down the offensive drives launched by Acton. Playing between the uprights for Acton was Patrick Conlin who stood on his head keeping his team in the running. Final score: Oshawa 3 Acton 2. Into consolation The Tanners final game saw the team qualify for a spot in the consolation finals against the Lindsay Muskies for the cham- pionship. Coming off two tough games against the two top seeded adversaries, Acton was ready to do battle and this became more than evident as soon as the steel hit the ice. Although the Muskies managed to place the first notch onto the scoreboard early in the first, a late period drive saw Spencer Evans and Brendan Shannon pick up the puck from a foiled Muskie drive and feed it to Neil Mowat. Mowat in turn carved his path through the Muskie defence and fire off a wrist shot easily beating the glove hand of the Lindsay net minder ending the period. The second period saw both teams test each others limitations resulting in play being exchanged equally in both ends. The score remained tied up through the third period but with just over one minute re- maining on the scoreboard Spencer Evans intercepted a Muskie pass, fed the puck to Michael Gibbons who carved his way into Muskie territory, and fed the puck onto the stick of Brendan Shannon who wasted no time in firing the puck through the pads of a now sprawling Lindsay goaltender to secure the win for Acton. A rock solid performance by Patrick Conlin solidified his teams victory. Thanks to the proficiency for hockey acquired from the coaching staff of Nathan Marzo, Dave Ethier, Garrett Williams, Mi- chel Reid and Mike Gibbons, a determined effort was put forth by each and every member of the team to secure this cham- pionship win. An outstanding presentation of setting up passing, and delivering their shots was the offensive lines of Joey Reid, Ian Early, Adam Coltson, Michael Gib- bons, Brendin Geim, Brendan Shannon, Shannon Oulton, Neil Mowat and Jason Goodfellow who amazed team supporters with an array of offensive drives. The unwavering line of defence pro- vided by Bradley Corpe, Liam OConnell, Tyler Schouten, Noah Weir and Spencer Evans ensured that the adversarial offen- sive forces were shut down and the goal tending capabilities of Patrick Conlin provided the final measure of security for the team.
