ACTON Proud member of the Canadian Jiu Jitsu Association (519)853-2424 Gain Respect, Self Confidence, Self Defense, Fitness & Fun To the editor: On behalf of Links2Care I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all those who helped to make our recent Christmas Needs Program a success. We have many families in our com- munity that struggle each and every day to make ends meet and our program helps to meet some of those needs during the holiday season. This past holiday season 134 lower income families, with a total of 284 children, received hampers of new clothing and toys. We are so pleased to be able to offer this program - we certainly could not provide this many hampers without the help of the churches, businesses and individuals that assisted by sponsoring families and by donating money and gift items. Christmas can be a dif- ficult time of year for many people and often families are very hesitant to ask for help. I can assure you that the families are very grateful and often quite emotional when they re- ceive the hampers. Thank you so much for the wonderful gift that you have given to those in need in our community your support is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Cathy Gerrow, Community Support Coordinator. To the editor, Halton Region is pursuing the possibil- ity of building one of the newer types of incinerator. Each type proposes heating mixed waste, extracting some energy and burying the leftovers. This is a huge undertaking that could limit our options for the future. Before Council makes its decision Im hoping that the citizens of the Region will take part in a discussion of the issues by writing in to the newspaper and sharing any letters written to our elected representatives. Some of the things we need to examine are: 1) Health Effects 2) Cost: With estimates of $750-$800 million what will the taxpayer pay? 3) Energy Loss 4) Climate Change: Can we afford to put more CO2 in the atmosphere? 5) Alternatives: If we can create more jobs, use safer methods of waste reduction that make money for industry, should we burn these resources? Its time to get involved. Sincerely, Barbara Halsall, Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.), Halton Hills. Canadian Blood Services is urging Acton residents to celebrate Valentines Day by making an appointment to donate blood with a loved one, friend or co-worker at a clinic at Acton Legion on Thursday, February 15. Three out of four Canadians say they are willing to donate, so Blood Services is asking people to look around and encourage someone to take that first step by including them in their next appointment. The Acton clinic is from 4 to 8p.m. By donating blood regularly (three times a year) two donors can directly benefit the lives of 18 patients one donation can save three lives. Call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) to include blood donation as part of your February (Valentines) activities or to re-schedule your appointment. Log onto www.blood.ca and use our new clinic locator to find a blood donor clinic convenient to you. Officials with MPAC the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation that provides municipali- ties with the data needed to set tax rates will be invited to Halton Hills Council to make a presentation. MPAC officials have been under attack from many sides since Ontarios ombudsman found that its officials used cloak and dagger behaviour and cutthroat manoeuvering around property owners. Ward Two Councillor Bryan Lewis indicated the response MPAC of- ficials may get from some in Halton Hills when he said they should take the slick and smooth up on their offer of an informa- tion session. Fuel costs The ever-increasing price at the pumps was very clear in a recent Town staff re- port recommending Town Council approve three contracts for unleaded, diesel and biodiesel fuels for Town vehicles. The price per litre for unleaded gas is up 46.9 per cent over three years and the price of diesel is up 35.6 per cent. The total for the one year supply contracts, with possible three-year additional terms, is $346,705. Farm tax deferral Seems like some local farmers were surprised with the arrival of the final tax bill which they were able to defer until Septem- ber until a Council plan allowing them to not made quarterly payments until after their crops are in. As Council set the due dates for the 2007 tax levy recently, Regional Ward 3/4 Councillor Jane Fogal asked how they can make it clearer that the deferred taxes are due on September 27, 2007. Treasurer Ed DeSousa said letters went out to all qualified properties, and staff can now manage those farmers who want to take advantage of the month payment program. The farmer tax deferral program costs the Town approximately $4,100 an- nually in lost income with the potential to help 475 farmers. To the editor, Several times you have published my letters re easy time/money/pollution sav- ings for our local politicians and public to consider. Does anyone care? I would have thought such an easy way to save money perhaps reduce tax would interest most. The most important thing reduce pol- lution. Garbage trucks only picking up from every other house in other words neighbours placing garbage together in- stead of individually would be so simple that most would understand the savings. Half the stops by garbage trucks = 1/3 less time = 30% fuel saving = 30% less pollution = labor savings = truck maintenance savings = better quality air. Need I say more? John Shadbolt.
