4 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2007 Please, if you intend to renew your 2007 Acton Seniors Centre member- ship but havent done so yet, take the time to do so before the membership committee starts to phone lapsed members. We are all busy, and it takes valu- able time getting in touch with those who havent renewed. Marj Allan has just given me a list of interesting speakers and events hap- pening for the next two months. The monthly cookery class will restart on January 23 at 10a.m. and sign-up sheets should be at the front desk. There will be a presen- tation on how to protect yourself from the Avian flu, SARS, stomach flu etc., on Jan. 24 at 10a.m. This should be very informa- tive as the speaker wrote an excellent article in the Sun recently. There will be free flu kits for the first 200 people. If you would like more information you can call Joanne Bissonnette at 519-853-5708. There is the Spa Escape on Jan. 30 at 1:30p.m. On Feb. 6 a dietitian will be here at 1:30p.m. to an- swer questions and give information. There is a lot of talk in the media about the high rate of type two diabetics, and how it is increasing at an alarming rate. What can you do to help yourself and your family? Perhaps you will hear the answers at this Georgetown Fergus 16 Mountainview Rd S., Suite 205 200 St. Patrick St. E., Suite 5 Georgetown, Ontario L7G 4K1 Fergus, Ontario N1M 1M4 (905)702-2597 (519) 843-7344 Michael Chong, M.P. Everyone is welcome to our speakers at any time. The Acton Legion , Branch 197, made a very generous donation to the Centre recently which will help us to make the presen- tations better for everyone by way of an overhead mirror and a cordless mike. Once the arena staff in- stalls the mirror it will benefit everyone. Peggy tells me there were only six people at carpet bowling last Mon- day. Some people had the flu, and of course the snow birds have flown south. Ivan Bozics Black team beat Nives Bozics Brown team 14 -4. We hope the players are feeling better by next week. At the Thursday af- ternoon bid euchre, I understand Shirley Hunter and Ruth Burke had Moon- ers. There will be a new newsletter out shortly, and all our programs will be listed in it, with a calendar of events for February and March. I see quite a few people are taking advantage of the Maple Lodge Farms or- ders. Dont forget to check out the catalogue. The or- der forms and information are at the front desk, and orders must be placed and paid for by Jan. 31 for pick up on Feb. 10. I have been away for a few days on a Mystery Trip arranged by Great Canadian Coach trips. I was traveling with five friends, and was amazed to see five other Actonians waiting at Tim Hortons for the bus. There were 15 coaches (over 700 seniors) leaving Southern Ontario in a long blue line. No one knew where the final desti- nation was, only that it was in the U.S.A. We ended up in Pittsburgh and had a great time. The weather was spring-like, although it started to snow on the way home. All Great Canadian trips can be booked through the Travel desk at the Cen- tre, and our team is very knowledgeable. This is the third time I have taken this trip. The people we met in the States thought we were Crazy Canadians to take off on a four day trip with no idea of where we were going to end up. If you want a little taste of spring during our winter months Canada Blooms at the Toronto Convention Centre is the place to go. The tentative date is March 8 if there is enough inter- est. The Black Forest Inn in Conestoga is presenting A Tribute to the Women in Country Music. There will be a bus going on Wednesday, Feb. 14, the price will include a hot lunch. As usual the infor- mation is at the travel desk, and someone from the travel committee is there every Monday and Friday morning, but you can sign up any time. The next trip to Rama is Wednesday, Jan. 31. Something a little more local, the nameless womens group is going to have a tour of Superior Glove on Tuesday, Jan. 30. We will meet at the Centre at 12:45 and car pool to Superior Glove for 1p.m. I went with the M.I.M. group one time and it was very interesting. The trip to the Toyota plant has been postponed until the spring. On a final note, the an- nual general meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 27. We hope to see a good crowd on that day, as it is your Centre. The latest Halton Seniors Directory for 2007 is now at the front desk, and has lots of interesting informa- tion in it. An added bonus, the writing is fairly large, so it is easy to read. The 50/50 draw has not been won for the last two weeks. ????? ???????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????? 90 CANDLES: It was like an Old Home Week in the Terrance Room at the Birchway Place apartments Sunday af- ternoon, Jan. 14 as Ed Foottit, left, celebrated his 90th birthday with fam- ily, friends and residents. Mayor Rick Bonnette was there to bring greetings from the Town and Eds wife Bette greeted the throngs of people there to offer congratulations. The couple are lifelong Acton residents except for war service and a stint in Northern Ontario.
