16 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2007 The Galvcast Peewee BB Tanners had their hands full with the Lincoln Blades in Round 2 of the OMHA play- offs but were full value for their victory polishing off the Blades in four games of the best-of-five series. The Tanners split the first two games of the series in Beamsville and then took both games back on home ice to clinch the series and advance to the next playoff round. All games but the final were one goal margins. Play in Beamsville On Jan. 31 the Tanners hit the Beamsville ice set to play hockey but Lincoln scored the lone goal of the first period. Toe-to-toe competi- tion continued through the second period with Lincoln and Acton exchanging goals, the Tanners courtesy of the woodwork of Greg Wells and Josh Tremblay facilitating the feed of the puck to Ryan Dunlevy who found the hole and punched in the rubber. The third period saw the Tanners kick the game up to the next level with TJ Baker driving the rubber between the blade and the post in an exceptional wrap-around goal courtesy of the feed from Wyatt Martin and Evan Oulton. The Tanners contin- ued with Greg Wells placing the rubber into the top shelf courtesy of Adam Duval and Josh Tremblay. Lincoln again managed to even up the score. However, Josh Tremblay fed the puck to Mitchell Brake, who per- formed his magic and ruffled the Blade netting for the game winner. Greg Slowka played solid hockey in the Acton net. Final Score: Acton 4 Lin- coln 3. On Friday, Feb. 2, the series resumed with the Blades hun- gry to even it up. The Blades were first on the scoreboard to end the first period. Lincoln secured two addi- tional markers in the second before the Tanners would light up the lamp courtesy of a Ryan Dunlevy wrist shot which hit its mark in the top corner courtesy of passes from TJ Baker and Josh Tremblay. Actons final marker came in the third with Josh Trem- blay once more providing Ryan Dunlevy the neces- sary ammunition to fire off a blast of rubber, which hit its mark. Although Acton blue was the only colour to be seen out front of the Blades cage in the dying minutes of the game, Lincoln held off the Tanners. Final Score: Lincoln 3 Acton 2. Back in Acton When the series resumed on Wednesday, Feb. 7, the Tanners had home rink ad- vantage. With the series tied 1-1 both teams strove hard for the win. After a scoreless first period, the lone goal of the second went up on the visi- tors scoreboard. The Tanners rebounded in the third when Mitchell Brake and Josh Tremblay worked the puck in front of the Lincolns net, and fed it to Michael Evans who slid it under the netminders splayed pads. The Tanners scored another courtesy of Matt Fritz who picked up the puck deep in the Blades zone, fed it to Mitchell Brake, who in turn supplied Gavin Ragan with the artillery required to let loose with a low flying bullet which gave them the go-ahead goal. Greg Slowka played a solid game between the uprights helping facilitate his teams win. Final Score: Acton 2 Lin- coln 1. Acton once more hosted the Lincoln Blades in game four of an exciting series. Lincoln faced a must-win situation and the Tanners could taste victory. Actons first and only goal in the first came courtesy of Jake MacPherson who seized a loose puck and fired off another low flying bullet which found its way through skates and through the Blades bulls-eye. A physical game continued through a scoreless second period but it was the third period that was to all Acton. Nick Vandereyken intercepted a Blades pass and fed the rubber to an awaiting Ryan Dunlevy who placed it under the crossbar to give Acton a 2-0 lead. Then with just 28 seconds remaining in regulation play, TJ Baker hit his mark with a precise pass to Josh Tremblay out front of the Lincoln mesh. He snapped off a shot which hit the mesh, securing the Tanners victory in this game and the series. A extraordinary game by Actons cage master Mitchell Christopher kept the Tanner mesh free from any inva- sion and earned him a well deserved shutout. Final Score: Acton 3 Lin- coln 0. In their ongoing OMHA round robin playoffs, the In- side Edge Pro Sports Novice BB Tanners played host to the Elora Lightning February 10 and the visitors were the victors. Both teams were hungry for a win, evident from the drop of the puck. However a few bad bounces of the puck in the first assisted the Lightning in going into the second period with a two- goal advantage. Not to be outdone, the young Tanners wowed the crowd with their skills that saw Elora unable to break free from their own end for the majority of the period. Actons first goal came via Liam OConnell who performed his woodwork, feeding the puck from blue line to the front of the Elora cage where Jason Goodfel- low without hesitancy fired it into the top right corner beating the Lightning glove hand. The dying minutes of the second saw Neil Mowat steal the rubber from an Elora winger and deftly carve his way through a throng of black sweaters to fire the puck through the splayed pads of the Elora goaltender for the home teams second notch. Elora, however, also man- aged to breach Actons cage once more allowing them to hold on to the one goal advantage. The third period saw both teams play aggressively. The Tanners fired off a barrage of shots at the Elora netminder but were unable to penetrate the Elora cage. Patrick Conlin stood on his head for the Tanners, warding off an onslaught of lightning strikes but Elora managed to fire off one final blast of rubber late in the third which would hit the mark and secure a victory. Final Score: Elora 4 Acton 2. Correction Last weeks New Tanner published a photo of a goal- keeper in the Peewee hockey tournament identifying him as Peter Churchman. Wrong! The youngster was Joshua Karat, goalie for R&M Con- struction. We apologize for the error. All games are at Acton arena.
