The teams split the first two games leading to the final fixture in Acton on Sunday where the Tanners shut out the visitors 2-0 to take the series. The Tanners are now playing Saugeen Shores (Port Elgin) in the OMHA quarter finals which started last night (Wednesday, Feb. 14) in Acton, resuming in Port Elgin on Friday, Feb. 16 and then back to Acton the next day, Saturday, at 6p.m. The round robin against Fergus started with a game on Tuesday, Feb. 6 in Fergus with the Tanners missing three players knowing Fer- gus would play a very rough and tough style. The Tanners were down a goal midway through the first period. Acton goal- keeper Colton Wiens was kept extremely busy but played solid, holding Fergus to the single goal through the remainder of the first and then the entire second period. The Tanners tried but could simply not get shots off or at least not ef- fective ones. Shortly into the third period, Fergus sank their second goal. Tanners fans were shaking their heads starting to feel the scoreless drought was impossible to break. However, the Tan- ners found new life with two quick goals within 26 seconds and it completely changed the outlook and plan of the game. The first goal was from a powerplay off the stick of Jesse Spurrell. Within seconds of that goal, an accurate bullet shot from AJ McConville at the blue line completely surprised the Fergus goalie. A few minutes later, a squirmish near the net resulted in the Tanners losing AJ to a major penalty but also seemed to ignite them. The remainder of the third went scoreless and lead to 10 minutes of overtime. Both teams hit the ice looking for the lets end this here and now goal. Reaching the one-minute mark of OT still even had both teams thinking that is how it would end. Colton continued to cover anything Fergus shot at him. Then Ja- cob Dougan passed the puck up to Brandon Braga who took it in. He got checked but was able to shovel the puck through to a speeding Josh McDonell just coming off the bench. Patience and reading the goalie, paid off as Josh wait- ed for the goalie to commit then placed an on-ice slider past him to edge Fergus 3-2. Just like that, the game was over and it was a very happy drive back from Fergus. Assists were awarded to Brandon Masini (2), Josh McDonell (1) and Brandon Braga (1). On Saturday, February 10 the game in Acton could have finished the series. However, Fergus took the lead in period one and kept right on scoring to leave the Tanner coaches and fans wondering what happened with a final score of 8-.1. The single Tanner goal came off the stick of Bran- don Braga. Fergus came to Acton as the Tanners had home ice advantage. The Tanners knew they had to come out both hitting and scoring. One minute into the game brought scoring as Brandon Masinis shot found the inside of the net. With only a slim lead, after this came the hitting, solid defence, good puck handling and once again very solid goal tending by Colton Wiens. A second goal midway through the second came as Brandon Masinis cross-ice pass to Jacob Dougan was fed to rushing defenceman Ellis Lavallee. He made no hesitation and top-shelfed the puck. Fergus had their chances as the Tanners fought off a 5 on 3 powerplay. But, the Tanners had control of both the game and the puck at this point putting forth enough pressure that Fergus never had a chance to pull their goalie. The final 2-0 score decid- ed that the Tanners wanted this series in their win col- umn. - Edith McDonell Bantam BB Tanners edge Lincoln 3-2 to win series Acton Tanners Home Hardware Bantam BB skills shone through on Saturday, Feb. 10, as the Tanners fi- nally put Lincoln behind them after a great game five in a best of five OMHA play- offs. After a very tense, nail biting game, Acton came out ahead by a narrow 3-2 score taking the series by the same margin. Both teams came out hard and fast in the first period, both wanting to advance to the next round in the OMHA Playdowns against Saugeen Shores but it was Acton, once again, drawing first blood in the game. The lead was short-lived as Lincoln countered with a goal of their own to tie things up. The game was full of excite- ment and entertainment for everyone. Fans who came out to support the Tanners were not disappointed. Early into the second period, however, there were a few gasps when goalie Joey Drexler went down, injured in a play. He recovered quickly to rounds of cheers and went on to play an amazing game between the pipes for Acton. Goals were netted by Ryan Faber, assisted by Adam Am- ato, Bradley Kri, unassisted on a short-handed play, and by Ryan Faber, assisted by Nick Eagan and Matt Allain. All of the Tanner players combined to play a great series against Lincoln. On t o t h e n ex t s e - ries..
