The $11.1-million capital spending plan approved by the budget committee for this year includes the fol- lowing projects in Acton: $2,500 to oil Canada geese eggs in Prospect Park to stop them from hatching and help reduce lake pol- lution $671,000 to resurface Main Street from Knox Ave. to Actons southerly limit $55,00 to resurface MPP Ted Arnott is con- tinuing to call upon the Ontario government to commence public hear- ings on the job losses in Ontarios manufacturing sector. Under Arnotts proposal, first raised in the Ontario Legislature in May 2005, and supported by the Legis- lature last fall, the all-party Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Af- fairs would immediately conduct this review of the competitiveness issues which manufacturers are facing. Ontario has been bleeding factory jobs at an alarming rate with the loss of more than 100,000 good paying jobs. I cant understand why the Government is unwill- ing to allow a committee of MPPs from all parties to look into this problem, Mr. Arnott stated. By continuing to ignore our manufacturing sector, they are wilfully complicit in the job losses weve expe- rienced during the past year and a half. Although there have been no Provincial hearings, the House of Commons Stand- ing Committee on Industry, Science, and Technology recently released a major, 142-page report with rec- ommendations for federal action to support manufac- turing jobs. The committee has been studying the man- ufacturing issue since May, 2006. Arnott is a Member of the Provincial Legislatures Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, which recently wrapped up its pre-budget consultations. On Febru- ary 1, he tabled a notice of motion with the Committee asking that Provincial hear- ings on the manufacturing job losses begin as soon as the Provincial Legislature reconvenes. Arnott is the Conservative candidate for Wellington/ Halton Hills in Octobers provincial election. Halton Regions website www.halton.ca now makes it easier for residents to con- nect with newly recruited family physicians in Halton Hills, Milton, Burlington and Oakville. Up-to-date contact information is pro- vided for the family doctors, all of whom are welcom- ing new patients to their practices. We are pleased to be able to offer this additional help to people in our community who are looking for family physicians, said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. More and more people are using the web to find the in- formation they need and this is a very good example of how we can use our website to make it easier for people to access services. The listing of new doc- tors is provided by the Halton Physician Recruit- ment Initiative which was established in 2002 to ad- dress Haltons shortage of family physicians through a comprehensive market- ing and promotion strategy. It is a collaborative effort between Halton Region and representatives from the local municipalities of Halton Hills, Milton, Bur- lington and Oakville, local physicians and senior area hospital staff.
