Continued from page 12 need to ensure the necessary steps are taken so a lawsuit wouldnt bankrupt the town- ship. White asked Kennedy what exactly is the objec- tion to the log, and Kennedy answered, If you administer something then you are more liable. We get named in a lawsuit if we sign on behalf of the township. Cookie [township employee] cant work seven days and neither can we. What if we dont get there until later and someone got hurt? Councillor Moyer empathized with their con- cerns, saying, You feel vulnerable but in court it is just the opposite. Why daily check? Weir demanded to know why the rinks have to be checked daily, while play- ground equipment does not. White explained that ice changes daily. Weir also asked, If Cookie checks it once a week, how could we get sued? Smith explained that a complainant would also go after the volunteers that perform the functions. Despite continual assur- ance from council that these procedures would decrease the volunteers liability and guarantee insurance cov- erage, Kennedy and Weir insisted that the township is placing the liability on the shoulders of the vol- unteers. Breen asked, Do you understand that [by not signing] youre putting us in a position to make you more liable? This is based on ex- pert advice from lawyers and insurance professionals. Kennedy said he doesnt believe that. Breen retorted, You believe the experts are wrong? Weir expressed con- cern that if a five-year-old child gets injured, then the kid gets nothing. Knapp explained that the policy protects the volunteers, but does not deny an injured party their rights. Weir also said he was ticked off that the policy does not follow that of Guelph. White said, Maybe were on the leading edge. It shows diligence and makes us culpable. Kennedy said they need time to think about it and White suggested talking later in the week, perhaps coming to a compromise. Regarding more professional advice, he joked, Were out of experts. Weir answered, Well bring Don Cherry. Registration for Halton Hills Minor Football is taking place this Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Acton arena from 10a. m. to 6p.m. for boys 10 to 17 years of age. Saugeen came to the arena determined to leave Acton with a win but the Tanners played with confidence and spirit not wanting to give anything away. The Tanners played a hard fought game for three periods until the final three minutes when Saugeens do or die game plan started to succeed. The overtime period last- ed only 4 minutes, but it was an agonizing nail-biter for the fans. Tanner goalie, Andrew Cheeseman, made a couple of timely saves to keep Acton in the game un- til Evan McMeekin took a great pass from Bradley Kri and finally put the Tanners on top with a score of 5-4.
