Guelph Chamber Choir performing Carmina Burana at River Run Centre The Guelph Chamber Choir is performing the dramatic and thrilling Car- mina Burana on March 31 to celebrate the choirs 10 year anniversary of their first concert held at the River Run Centre (RRC). Almost exactly 25 years after composer Carl Orffs death, the piece is a tribute to the RRC on its anniversa- ry, since the choir performed it for the River Run Cen- tres first full concert at the opening gala of the Guelph Spring Festival in May, 1997. This performance is an important Guelph celebra- tion, said Gerald Neufeld, the choirs director, who will be conducting Carmina. The 40 strong choir will be expanded to 100 with sing- ers from other choirs around the city. We are delighted to have soloist Kevin McMil- lan coming back to perform this work with us. The Canadian baritone sang with the Guelph Cham- ber Choir at the inaugural concert in 1997. He started his singing career while a student at Guelph. He also performed Carmina with the University of Guelph Choir and the Guelph Chamber Choir in 1987 and has re- ceived a Grammy for his performance of Carmina with the San Francisco sym- phony. Carmina Burana is a gift to choirs, says Kevin McMillan. It is unique because its a community effort. It makes a very strong impression on the audience and everyone involved feels like they have been part of a huge success. Guest soprano, Lesley Andrew, is a highly versa- tile performer and teacher of voice and drama from Stratford, and Guelphs own Chris Fischer is the tenor soloist. The Hart House orchestra from Toronto, will accom- pany the choir in Carmina. The orchestra will also per- form Mozarts Sinfonia concertante, directed by Henry Janzen of Guelph. Guelph Chamber Choir is a group of largely amateur singers who foster the devel- opment and appreciation of fine choral music in Guelph and area. Their 27th season began with a moving perfor- mance of Mozarts Requiem on Remembrance Day and a sold out performance of Messiah accompanied by period instruments in De- cember. In the ten years since the Choir performed in the opening gala of the Guelph Spring Festival with Carmi- na in May 1997, they have performed many concerts in this venue, which has become a favourite with the choir and audiences alike. Tickets to Carmina Bura- na are available at the River Run Centre at 519-763-3000 or 1-877 520-2408 or pur- chase tickets on line at www. riverrun.ca.
