House League Hockey Playoffs Peewee BB Tanners edge Fergus but fall 5-3 to Guelph Storm Acton Galvcast Peewee BB Tanners hosted Fergus Highlanders in game one of the Tri-County round robin playoffs on Feb. 27 but they were poor hosts, edging the visitors 4-3 with a list of injury stricken players. Late in the first period a slick pass from Josh Tremblay to Ryan Dunlevy, in front of the Highlander net allowed him to score the opening marker. The second pe- riod saw the Tanners get off to an early two goal lead when a Gavin Ragan Mitchell Brake feed to Michael Evans was suc- cessful. He wasted no time in sliding the puck through the pads of a sprawling Highlander netminder. Fergus matched Acton point for point to finish off the second and got the go-ahead marker early in the third. However, the rest of the period was Actons as Josh Tremblay and Ryan Dunlevy placed the rubber neatly onto the stick of Greg Wells who snapped off a shot into the top corner beating the Fergus netminders glove hand. With a tie game and the period winding down, and the rubber deep in Fergus zone, Mitchell Brake and Michael Evans placed the puck from behind the Fergus cage onto the stick of an approaching TJ Baker who fired off the game winner deep into the mesh. Thanks go to Michael Fatrdla, an AP player, who provided the necessary assistance to the BBs shorthanded defensive team in this game. Greg Slowka played a solid game maintaining the final measure of security for the team. Final Score: Acton 4 Fergus 3. Storm trips Tanners On Sunday, March 4 the Peewee Tanners hosted the Guelph Storm in game two of their Tri-County play- offs. The first two periods saw the Tanners chalk up three notches on the score- board to Guelphs one but the Storm came on in the third to notch a 5-3 win. Actons first came cour- tesy of the stick work of Wyatt Martin and Greg Wells feeding Josh Trem- blay who wasted no time in sinking it deep into the Storm mesh. Shortly it would once again be puck wizard, Josh Tremblay who ruffled the mesh again thanks to artillery supplied him by Ryan Dunlevy and Greg Wells. The Tanners third notch came via a Mitchell Brake, Tyler Christopher feed of the puck to Michael Ev- ans out front of the Storm cage. Evans managed to fire off the puck as he weathered a blow from the Storm defence putting the Tanners out ahead 3-1. A late second period Storm goal put Guelph within arms reach of Acton. However, the final period changed the tide. A string of penalties saw the Tanners watch a fair share of the game remain- der from the confines of the box. With the man advantage, the Storm man- aged to breach Actons cage twice to give them the go-ahead goal. With less than two min- utes to play the Tanners pulled all the stops and managed to even up the tally through a Mitchell Brake snapshot on passes supplied by Ryan Dunlevy and Josh Tremblay. A final power play for the Storm in the last min- ute of play resulted in the Storm getting the go-ahead marker and one last open netter to secure their victo- ry. Greg Slowka in the net did what he could, keeping his team in the game. Final Score: Guelph 5 Acton 3. with The New Tanner Sports Peewees down Elora to open Tri-County round robin playoffs On Sunday, R&M Con- struction Peewees travelled to Elora take on the Ava- lanche in Tri-County round robin playoffs. The Elora team has had some suc- cess against Acton and the Tanners were prepared to battle. They succeeded with a 4-1 win. It was Elora, however, that struck first in a flurry of activity around the Tan- ner net. Goaltender Ryan Payne made the first save but the puck rolled into the net off of his back and gave the home team an early 1-0 lead. Acton responded however as the defense pairing of Andrew Lafrance and Josh Martin brought the puck into the Elora zone. Martin took a shot and forward Billy Mowat was there to fire in the rebound and tie the game at 1-1. Shortly, Carter Ebbinge fed a pass to Lafrance who found Walter Kirkness. Kirkness showed great puck handling ability as he stickhandled through the Avalanche defence and rocketed a shot to the high corner to give Acton a 2-1 lead. In the second period Jus- tin Giordano fired a puck into the Elora zone and Dylan Bickers won a battle in the corner, and found Eric Butson in front of the Avalanche net. Butsons shot to the top right hand corner extended the Tan- ners lead to 3-1. In the third period Acton continued to press hard and Elora was unable to keep up. The Avalanche found themselves down two men as a result of penalties and, against the powerful Tanners offence, this is a mistake. Once again, a hard shot from Josh Martin resulted in a rebound for the speedy and diminutive forward David Bickers. Bickers made no mistake burying the rebound and giving the Tanners their fourth goal. The game featured many rushes led by the defence that resulted in good scor- ing opportunit ies. As well, there was solid body checking including one thunderous check by de- fenceman Michael Fatrdla that seemed to put the Ava- lanche off of their game. Goaltender Ryan Payne was solid throughout this game and only gave up the one goal. The final re- sult a 4-1 victory for the Tanners.
