THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2007 THE NEW TANNER 13 Bantam Tanners game up on Petrolia Oilers Split first two games in Petrolia, win 3-2 at home Actons Home Hardware Bantam BB Tanners are leading their OMHA semi-final playoff with Petrolia Oilers two games to one with the fourth game of the best-of-five series to be played Saturday, hope- fully in Acton but more likely at the Erin arena. The Tanners have already set a record by being the first Acton Bantam BB team to advance this far in the OMHA playdowns. The Tanners took the first game of the series 4-3 in Petrolia on Friday, March 2 but the Oilers came back with an overtime win on their own bailwich on Sat- urday. The Tanners took a 2-1 win in the third game in Acton Sunday setting the stage for game four Sat- urday. Lack of ice time in Acton may move the game to Erin arena. Lots of action The first game in Petrolia was nothing short of all the other games so far in the playdowns. There was lots of action and excitement for the fans who also made the long drive to Petrolia. Acton was quick to chalk up the first goal to get the Tanner blood flowing! At 9:05 in the first period, Bradley Kri took a great pass from linemate Brandyn McCarthy to put the Tanners ahead. Not long after, Ryan Faber, after being fed the puck by Adam Amato, put the Tanners up by two. With 2:25 left in the first period, Dayne Black also managed to find the net with Adam Amato assisting on the play. Petrolia began to show Acton their version of hockey with some question- able hits and slashes. If this was an attempt to put the Tanners off their game, it was all for not! Petrolia scored two quick goals in the second period in an attempt to come back, but Brandyn McCarthy, assisted by Jordan Duin, put the game away with the fourth Tanner goal at 6:38 in the third period. Tanner goalie, Andrew Cheeseman, made the Oilers work for the three goals they netted. Final score was 4-3 for Acton sending them into game two one up in the series. Overtime loss Petrolia came out playing hard in the second game but with questionable methods, seemingly invisible to of- ficials. After a late night in the hotel, the Tanners had trouble finding their A game to bring to the arena. Petrolia was first to open up the scoring and towards the end of the second period the game on the line, Brad- ley Kri found an opening in the Petrolia net after a very timely pass by Nathan Bennett to tie up the game sending the Tanners into, yet another overtime period. The overtime period was nothing less than incredible, the type of OT period to which Tanner fans are quick- ly becoming accustomed. Both sides desperately tried to capture the two points but it was Petrolia that prevailed with again just 42 seconds left in the OT period, tying the series. Joe Drexler played a terrific game between the pipes, keeping it close for the Tanners. Win at home Petrolia came out hoping to overpower the Tanners with their brute force to win game three in Acton, but the Tanners gave them a lesson on how hockey should be played. At 11:00, Adam Amato opened up the scoring for Acton after being set up by the dynamic duo, Nathan Bennett and Brandyn Mc- Carthy. Before the end of the first period, the quick sticks of Steven Wolsten- holme and Adam Amato fed the puck to Ryan Faber who made no mistake when he fired the puck into the net past the Oiler netminder. The more Petrol ias chances were thwarted the rougher play became. It wasnt long into the second period when the Tanners started to get suckered into the Petrolia style of hockey and penalties were handed out. One player from each team was ejected from the game, each receiving a two game suspension. The action continued right to the end of the game when Petrolia made it interesting putting the first Oiler goal passt the Tanner goalie, with 4:57 left to go in the third period. The goal certainly got the teams and the fans fired up, it was just a tease for Petrolia. Tanner goalie, Andrew Cheeseman, denied Petrolia any more goals. The Tanners ended the game 2-1, putting them ahead, again, in the series by one game. They hope to see as many fans out as possible, to sup- port them as they attempt to put an end to the semi-final series on Saturday. If necessary, game 5 will be played in Petrolia on Sunday, March 11. were up 3-0 before the Tan- ners answered. Ryan Faber was the first Tanner to find the net af- ter being set up by Steven Wolstenholme and Adam Amato at 3:59 of the second period. Early into the third pe- riod, the Oilers went ahead 4-1 and a win seemed to be a fading dream until Nick Eagan narrowed the gap at 7:05 with help from Adam Amato for Actons second goal. Matt Allain surprised the Petrolia goalie with a bullet shot to the back of the net, unassisted. With the score now 4-3, the Tan- ners could smell blood and Petrolia knew it. The dying minutes of the game saw the most action with the Tanners fighting hard for the puck. With Tri-County playoffs Novice Tanners fall to Eagles but trounce Guelph Storm 5-3 Acton Inside Edge Pro Sports Novice BB Tanners hosted Burlington Eagles in a Tri- County play-off game on Feb. 25 but were eclipsed by the Eagles. Actons Neil Mowat was first to light the lamp for the home team with a well-placed wristshot, which was set up by Michael Gibbons who played an integral part in all of his teams goals. Actons second marker came courtesy of an accurately placed pass by Michael Gibbons onto the stick of Adam Coltson allowing him to snap off a shot, beating the Eagle netminders glove hand. Now it was Michael Gibbons turn at ruffling the mesh with a top shelf wristshot for Actons third notch on the scoreboard, which had been precisely set up by Jason Goodfellow. With the score even through the end of the third period, both teams could taste the win, however, it was not the Tanners day as Burlington managed to sneak through a screened shot with just seconds remaining on the clock to secure the victory. Patrick Conlin played a solid game be- tween the pipes keeping his team in the game. Final score: Burlington 4 Acton 3. Weather Storm Acton Novices hosted Guelph Storm in another Tri-County play-off game on Sat- urday, March 3 and this time they were on the long end of the score. Coming off a hard loss to Burlington earlier in the week, the young Tanners hit the ice focused in a fast paced, scoreless first period. The remainder of the game however was to be all Acton as the Tanners launched a two period scoring blitz. Adam Coltson set up the Tanners first goal, feeding the puck to Michael Gibbons at the top of the circle, who wasted no time in firing off a line drive that beat the Storm net minder. Shortly after Neil Mowat provided Jason Goodfellow the necessary ammunition to snap off a shot out front of a crowded net allowing him to ruffle the Storm mesh. The third period saw the young Tanners hit the mark three more times as Michael Gibbons fed Tyler Schouten the rubber at the high slot allowing him to also fire off a line drive which would find its way between the splayed pads of the Guelph goalie. The Tanner fourth of the game would by far be the most extravagant starting with the stick to stick feed of the rubber by Liam OConnell and Neil Mowat to Brendan Shannon out front of a crowed Guelph net. With players closing in, Shannon flipped the puck up sweetly, allowing it to roll over top of the guardian and into the Storm cage. Actons final goal came courtesy of the stick work of Ian Early and Neil Mowat setting up Liam OConnell on the Storm blue line. OConnell let loose with a low flying bullet which found its way deep into the Storm mesh to finish off the Tanners scoring blitz. Patrick Conlin, sentinel of the Tanners pipe works played an outstanding game. Final score: Acton 5 Guelph 3. Tanners defend net from Oiler assault with The New Tanner Sports Several councillors could not resist offer- ing to mo-o-ove a resolution approving a $112,609 purchase order for artificial turf on Tuesday the farm reference fit because the state-of-the-art turf will be installed in the Acton Agricultural Society/indoor soc- cer facility being built in Prospect Park. I.C. Improvements Inc. of Stoney Creek was selected to supply the turf a choice made following a visit to several facilities, including a soccer club in Burlington where its product received high marks for durabil- ity, and the company for on-site support. The price includes a groomer, required to maintain the field, which should be ready for soccer players in May. In an update on the $1.9-million project, staff report it is on time, on budget and in- terium fund raising goals have been met. Staff notes the Society is disputing costs related to the disposal of non-hazardous soil from the construction site, an issue on hold until staff gets results from a record of site condition.
