Thompson Wellness Centre 25 Main Street North Acton, Ontario L7J 1V9 519-853-3460 Foot/Nail Care Sports Injuries Pediatrics Diabetic /Arthritic Foot Conditioning Custom Orthotics and Footwear Home visits Almost 100 members attended the Annual Gen- eral Meeting at the Acton Seniors Centre on Tuesday, Feb. 27. David Dodgson passed on regrets from Ter- ry Alyman who was unable to attend, and introduced Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette, who brought greetings from the Town, and introduced Council members Clark Somerville, Mike OLeary and Jon Hurst (who is our council liaison member). The mayor reminisced about some of the events he had enjoyed participating in at the Centre especially the rocking at the Rock-a- thon with his wife Josey after coaching the ladies hockey team in the early hours of the morning. He thanked Donna Rowley on behalf of himself and his fellow councillors for all her hard work over many years, and Jon Hurst for keeping himself and the council members in the loop about events at the Centre Dave thanked Donna for her guidance, even though he caused a laugh by call- ing her his tormentor. He said it had been a fantas- tic year with membership peaking at 325, and we are now looking to the fu- ture as we are outgrowing our space and have events and programs offered in the evening, thanks to the co operation of the arena staff. Donna Rowley, co-chair of Looking to the Future, explained exactly what that meant. She said our facil- ity cannot accommodate everything we would like to hold here, and to help de- fray the costs of expansion she described the Tree of Hope. Maria Sallay will paint a bare winter tree on the wall, and for every donation of $50 or more a leaf will be painted on the tree in your name. You can also make a donation in memory of someone, or just make a plain gift, and you will receive a tax-de- ductible receipt. Dave presented Marj Al- len, Faye Pink, Margaret Dodgson and Donna Row- ley with roses as a thank you for all their hard work. I am afraid Bryan Alder didnt receive roses, but a big thank you from Dave. Dave also thanked Wendy Krever, our co ordinator, and Sherry Mitchell, our administrative assistant, for all their hard work. The floor was turned over to Donna Rowley and her committee for the election of new board members. Jill Tetreault, Pat Frizzell, Dobbie Frizzell, Joanne Bissonnette, Jane McAl- lister, Betty Green were nominated and elected as board directors. Margaret Anderson was elected as President. Activan manager Don Clarkson came to answer the many questions we had on who is eligible to use the service. He told us that any- one 65 years of age or older who resides in the Halton Hills area and pre registers is eligible. It is very simple to register, simply call his office (905- 873-2601 ex 2617) and they will mail you a form. (We do have some forms at the Centre). You will need either a copy of your birth certificate, or some other government I.D After that you simply phone in 24 hours before you need the ride with your request. There are 300 seniors reg- istered at the moment, mostly from Georgetown. It costs $2 each way. After hours (8.00a.m-4.00p.m.) it is $3. He mentioned the Red Cross also offers a ser- vice which will go out of the Halton Hills area e.g. Brampton, Milton, Guelph. Tickets are on sale at the moment for the St Patricks dinner on March 28. It will feature soup, Irish stew and a variety of breads, and trifle. The cut-off date is early! March 13, so get your tickets now. If there arent enough tickets sold by then Victor will have to cancel the large hall. It is much nicer when we can use the larger hall, especially with the Irish entertainment. The carpet bowlers had eight members show up in spite of the snow and Stella Brunelles Brown team beat Betty Lockerbies Black team 17-6. Judging by the laughter and screams everyone enjoyed the af- ternoon. April 3 is an afternoon to look forward to. There will be someone here talking about astrology and Tarot cards. Come and get some information on these inter- esting subjects. One lucky person will win a Tarot card reading. Marion Storey is busy planning the Spring Ba- zaar and Luncheon on Saturday, May 12 from 11a.m-2p.m. There will be crafts, draws, baking, plants, (both indoor and outdoor) books and puz- zles. If you would like more information call Marion Storey 519-853-1098. There is still space for more ladies on the St. Lawrence Market and Sl- eemans trips, but I am afraid the Toyota Car plant tour is full. We have another knit- ting project at the Centre. Shiela Foster read about groups knitting Izzy Dolls, and would like to see if we can take up the challenge. One group has made 400, and she would like to beat that. The world Peace Day organizers are looking for people to knit these dolls for war-torn countries. Master Corporal Mark R. Isfeld (Izzy to his friends) saw a doll being used to teach children about the dangers of mine fields. His mother started to knit dolls and send them to him. Ironically he was killed by a mine, and his mother car- ried on in his memory. The pattern for the small dolls and more information on this story are at the front desk. You can call our craft coordinator Shiela Foster 519-853-0570 for more information. The Rama trip was en- joyed by everyone who went, and Marie Prueter won the 50/50, the birth- day prize was won by Lois Gorman, and the lucky seat prizes went to Chris Rob- ertson, Carol Clark, Al Mac Fadden and Marie Prueter. The next trip will be on Wednesday, March 28. Due to the winter storm last Thursday and Friday the Centre was closed so the 50/50 draw took place early Monday morning. Sad to say the person whose name was drawn had not put her loonie in the box.
