20 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2007 DONT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY APRIL & MAY! 5 1 9 8 5 3 5 5 8 2 1 8 6 6 3 6 4 3 2 7 7 93 Mill Street East, Acton, ON Politicians applaud end to pooling Municipal politicians applaud provin- cial plans to stop making GTA taxpayers foot the bill for Torontos social service costs. Each Halton taxpayer paid $180 to- wards the so-called pooling costs last year Haltons cost was $41-million but, the recent provincial budget in- cludes plans to reduce pooling charges by one-sixth of the 2004 levels each year, until they are eliminated in 2013. In 1998, Ontario became the only province to pay for social assistance and housing programs with property tax dollars. Because Toronto has 80 per cent of the social assistance clients and 74 per cent of the social housing stock in the GTA, the province decided to pool, or share, these social and housing costs among GTA municipalities, including Halton. The move was supposed to be temporary. Both Halton Hills and Halton Council have argued the pooling costs are unfair, and recently, Acton Councillor Clark Somerville convinced his Regional col- leagues to freeze Haltons share at last years levels in protest. Office costs Office supplies and furniture will cost the Town $800,000 over the next five years under purchasing deals recently approved by Council. The $513,000 office supplies contract with Basic Office Products is for three years, with options for two more. Council also approved a $315,000 deal with Basic to provide office fur- niture. Liquor at West Seven The new management of Seven West the former problem-plagued Nashville North and Club 2000 were applauded by several Town councillors for work- ing closely with the Norval Community Association since taking over and re- opening. Seven West received a liquor licence after signing an agreement to comply with Town bylaws covering issues in- cluding noise, property and community standards, littering, and to deal with issues quickly, including transportation for patrons at closing.
