Mr. OLeary: In the March 29 issue of The New Tanner, within your column, The Way I See It in The New Tanner, you indicated that The little advertised problem that I see with the hybrid is the replacement cost of the battery..., that they ... cost around $7,000 to replace and that ...they are not covered in the basic warranty. Whatever the source of your information, it is incorrect at least from the standpoint of Toyota vehicles. I own one of their hybrid cars and have checked with a Toyota deal- er on the replacement cost of the hybrid battery pack it is currently about $3,500 plus labour and taxes for a Prius and somewhat higher for the hybrid Camry, but still much lower than the amount cited by you. Granted, that is still a lot of money, but the battery pack (HV Battery) as well as other hybrid-related components are covered by a 96 month (8 year)/160,000 km warranty, which is in addition to the warranties on other vehicle components. Should the battery pack ever require replacing, disposal is handled by the dealer, not the vehicle owner. One further point: if the Ontario rebate on hybrids is still in effect, then one can add up to another $2,000 to the new Federal rebate. Should you doubt what Ive stated above or require additional information, then I suggest that you go di- rectly to the source - e.g., a hybrid car dealer or the vehicle manufacturers head office. After all, provid- ing the correct information to the public is important if people are to make in- formed decisions. Sincerely, P. B. Kauss P.S. I agree that some aspects of the vehicle incen- tives program are difficult to fathom. An example: the Chevrolet Impala E85 is eligible for a $1,000 re- bate, even though there are currently no gas stations which can supply 85 % ethanol fuel (Globe & Mail 03/ 24/07) would there be any connection to the Finance Ministers home riding? Also, since many of the large SUVs being hit with penalties are based on pickups, why is there no penalty for those pickups not essential to ones liveli- hood (e.g. farming)? Julie Conroy photo The Acton Seniors Recreation Centre will be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday, and reopen on Tuesday, April 10. The latest newsletters are at the front desk. Please pick one up when you are in. The only ones labeled in future will be the seniors apartments on Elizabeth Drive and Birchway. They have been hand delivered. If you are unable to get to the Centre in the next week or so, maybe you could ask a member who lives near you to pick one up for you. The evening euchre will be held on April 18 at 7:15p.m. The last Income Tax Clin- ic will be held on April 17. If you would like more information, or to make an appointment phone Eileen Dix 519-853-0493. With the nice warm weather we have been hav- ing during the past week, our thoughts are turning to lighter clothing. Mark Tuesday, April 10 at 2p.m. in your diary when Alia Fashions will be featuring the latest in Spring fash- ions. As usual our members will be showing the clothes to their best advantage. Tickets are available at the front desk. The Irish Night was en- joyed by everyone who attended, and the winner of the 50/50 was Eileen Dix. The door prizes were won by Margaret MacLel- lan, Jack MacFarlane, Ida Gordon, Nina Palichuk, and Billie Idzi. We had a great time singing many of the old Irish songs ac- companied by Joan on the piano and Hector Guay on the fiddle. Hector also en- tertained with some jokes and magic tricks. The next social dinner will be Friday, April 20 and will have a spring theme, including salad, ham, scal- loped potatoes, and of course dessert. You should get your ticket early as Vic- tor has to have an early cut off date in case he needs to cancel the large hall. Do you ever have unex- pected guests pop in for a supper? Joanne has the answer to your problems. The Centre is selling kits so you can surprise your guests with a delicious Little Caesars Pizza. They supply everything you need, and there are five different kits. So simple even the grandchildren can help you make them. Rama winners on the March 28 trip were: 50/50 Inga Britt, Birthday prize Norm (from George- town), and lucky window seats Mark Carr, Lillian Chapman, Eric Heptner, Beryl Clegg, June Gilson, Lou Lafrombois and Sylvia Burk. The next Rama trip will be on Wednesday, April 25. If you would like to go in future please sign the sheet requesting our own bus and then we will have lots of space for everyone and no one will be disappointed. It was nice to see so many ladies busy quilting at the Monday morning craft ses- sion. They were working on blocks in shades of browns and beige to make pillow shams and throw pillows. Several other ladies were busy knitting. Sheila Fos- ter has knitted over 100 Izzy Dolls which will be shipped to countries where there are landmines and will be used to educate the children and hopefully keep them safe. Margaret tells me there were nine carpet bowlers last Monday and Stella Brunelles Brown team beat Ivan Bozics Black team 19-5. The Black team need to pull their socks up. The Thursday morning ladies and men playing ca- nasta and cribbage enjoyed their games and would be happy if you would like to join them some Thursday. Bid Euchre is played on Thursday afternoons and Ruth Burke and Mary Ir- win both had mooners this week. If you are interested in hiking, the group will start at 10a.m. after Easter (Friday, April 13). Fif- teen members enjoyed a beautiful spring afternoon when they were hiking at Rockwood last Friday. The weekly 50/50 was not won this week, and will be drawn on Thursday next time due to the Easter holiday.
