Acton sunshinekidswear@sympatico.ca 519-836-8522 To the editor, In 1998 the Province began a program known as GTA Pooling. GTA regional municipalities became tax collectors for the Province who sent the money on to Toronto where it was used for Torontos welfare and social programs. The Halton pooling bud- get for 2007 is $41 million or $182 per Halton house- hold. Halton Region Council- lors have complained that GTA Pooling is not fair to Halton taxpayers. They claimed that social pro- grams should not be funded from municipal taxes. They also claimed that Halton taxpayers should not be sending municipal taxes out of the Region. The councillors were right! Now the Province has agreed to phase out GTA Pooling and the Region is trying to avoid returning the money to taxpayers. The Region would like to return the money in in- creased services whether we want them or not! Whether we can afford them or not! It appears that the cam- paign to end GTA Pooling was just another tax grab by our ever-expanding Re- gion. It is not the Regions money. Never was. They only collected it for the Province to give to Toronto. If there is any integrity in Region Council, they will return all freed-up pooling funds to Halton taxpayers. Tell your Region Coun- cillors that you want your money back. Gary Ellis, Director Milton Rural Residents Association. To the editor, Re: Councillor Scott As disgraceful and un- professional as the image of one of our elected officials slamming his fist may be, the fact that this behaviour took place in an attempt to intimidate and insult a 70 year old woman and fel- low councillor in our own council chambers is beyond shameful. I hope I am not the only one to find it ironic that The New Tanner reported this incident (good job by Rebecca Ring) on the same page as a story about our local churches preparing for holy week. I certainly hope that Mr. Scott plans to hang his head very low if he at- tends any of those services this Easter. As for Mayor White, he continues to disappoint. After promising the volun- teers in Eden Mills to reduce the ridiculous bureaucracy that Brad Rolofsen created around our ice rink he has in fact increased it. Then more secret meetings and closed council sessions. Im sorry, but is there something so top secret going on in our township that our mayor and council must shut out the press and public or hold shady meetings in secret lo- cations? How long will it be until the phrase Township Security Matter slithers its way into our lexicon? As much as the above may simply be examples of the standard we have come to expect from our politicians, the idea of our mayor standing by, giggling and smirking while a grown man assaults a 70-year-old woman can only engender disgust. Shame on you Chris White. To then avoid com- ment behind the hackneyed excuse that the case is before the courts just adds cowardice to your growing list of shortcomings. As for Councillor Roger Knapp, I can only say that I may have to take a small portion of my landscape and gardening business from the good and knowledge- able people at Greenscape Nursery this spring and send it your way, if only to get the chance to shake your hand. John Hall, Eden Mills. To the editor, Ten years ago this month, the Legion opened for se- niors a beautiful apartment building on Birchway Place in Acton. The seniors take pride in the building and the grounds surrounding it. Gardens were planted and looked after by the tenants. Our one big problem we have is the children, who have become young adults now. They tend to use our grounds as their private play area, even though property signs have been posted the last two years. Last weekend the shrubs in front of our building were badly damaged; they run through our gardens, peek in our windows, run around our parked vehicles and some think they have the right to do so. What happened to young persons showing respect for seniors or any landowner. How many parents ask or care where their children are playing at night? We enjoy being a part of the community, but would like and deserve the re- spect of being able to enjoy our evenings in peace and quiet. So listen up parents and start asking your chil- dren where are you playing please. A tenant. HONORARY ANGEL: Actons Rebecca Bath, 9, raised $777 for the Acton branch of the Canadian Cancer Society and donated her ponytail, to a company that makes wigs for kids who lose their hair to illness, last Thursday at Tanners Pub & Grill. She received an Angels T-shirt and was made an honorary Acton Angel by Fiona Brown, Cindy Gardener and Tracy Brouwer, members of the Acton Angels, who raise money for breast cancer research by taking part in the annual Weekend to End Breast Cancer.
