20 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2007 This Earth Day, before putting items in the garbage, think of ways to reduce, reuse and recycle your waste. Earth Day April 22 Plastic grocery bags dont go in the Blue Box. Use a reusable bag or bin for shopping instead of accepting plastic bags. Or, instead of throwing plastic bags in the garbage, take them back to your local grocery store many grocery stores have a bin to collect clean plastic grocery bags for recycling. Remember, every day is Earth Day! Return your liquor bottles (glass and plastic), Tetra- Pak and Bag-in-Box containers to The Beer Store to receive your cash deposit. This is another way to increase the amount of bottles being recycled. By returning bottles to The Beer Store you free up space in your Blue Box which means youll have more room to recycle other materials around your home. If youve been spring cleaning in your closets, dont throw away unwanted clothes, books, toys, linens, paired shoes, kitchenware and undamaged furniture. Give them to a reuse charity so others can enjoy them. Theres a Salvation Army drop-off located at the Halton Waste Management Site; for a list of other reuse charities in Halton, visit www.halton.ca/waste Household hazardous waste paint, varsol, stains, car oils, cleaners, pesticides, and solvents should not be poured down the drain because they can contaminate our drinking water. If you put them in the garbage, they could actually mix together and catch on fi re or explode! Bring your household hazardous waste which also includes batteries and compact fl uorescent light bulbs to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at the Halton Waste Management Site, where it can be properly refi ned, recycled or disposed of. This is free for residents. Frances Niblock photo Al Gores film on climate change hit with P.O.W.E.R. The April 2 screening of Al Gores An Inconvenient Truth was a great success, according to the evenings organizer, local environ- mental group Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.) It was standing room only for the 100 plus people who came to the screening and about half stayed for the discussion afterwards. At- tendees were interested in looking at municipal action on this issue and learning about ways to reduce home energy consumption. This event was a great starting point for our com- munity work and were looking forward to taking the next step, says Fiona Wagner, chair of the Climate Change and Energy sub- committee. P.O.W.E.R. is planning to present the discussion highlights at the next Halton Hills Council meeting on Monday, April 16. The group will also be proposing ways the town can assume their responsibility to do something. One strong message from the discussion is that citizens want the Town to take their role in minimizing greenhouse gases seriously. Citizens want Halton Hills to become a greener, healthier, more carbon-neutral com- munity, says Leslie Adams, president of P.O.W.E.R. Global warming is a very big issue and it can be quite overwhelming but our goal is to help community members, businesses and government officials with solutions, says Wagner. If everyone makes small changes to their daily rou- tines, imagine what kind of a positive contribution Halton Hills citizens can make in lowering our collective car- bon footprint. Planning for future events is already underway and will include guest speakers, workshops and educational opportunities. We may screen the Gore film again in Acton if the desire is there, says Wagner. Manliness, courage, loyalty qualities all leaders need To the editor, Monday, April 9, 2007 was the 90th anniversary of Vimy Ridge. This battle was won fought and won by the four Canadian Divi- sions who fought as one unit for the first time and the preparations and tactics they displayed. Lord Byng of Vimy once said Manliness, courage, loyalty these are the qual- ity that made the Canadian Corps famous, that gained them their splendid series of victories, that brought them through the critical times, and these qualities, which I saw for myself in the fight- ing man, were characteristic of the whole nation. These are the standards that those of us who have since served in the Cana- dian Military and those who serve today strive to maintain. However, I wonder if those standards still apply to some of our so called civilian leaders today. I would bring your at- tention to the example set by Mayor Chris White of the Township of Guelph/ Eramosa who try to work toward fiscal responsibility. Instead he supports those who try to prevent them from exposing cost over runs, waste and apparent misappropriation of funds. He appears to approve of bullying and seems to use the tactic himself, especially on women. This is not what one would call Manliness, courage, loyalty especially to the township citizens or council. He claims to posses leader- ship qualities. Perhaps it is just another of Chris Whites true bear stories. Clint Martin, Twp. of Guelph/Eramosa Way of the Cross
