Frances Niblock photo Acton Sea Cadets promoted By Frances Niblock With uniforms pressed and boots shined, members of the Navy League Cadets, Compass Rose corps, stood ramrod straight as they were inspected by a special guest at their weekly meeting last Wednesday night at the Acton Legion. Tom Grant, the sergeant- at-arms at Actons Branch 197 of the Royal Canadian Legion and a Canadian vet- eran, slowly walked among the ranks, stopping to speak to numerous cadets, as he car- ried out the inspection. It is quite a privilege for me to be here, Grant said, congratulating the group on the turnout and their very keen attitude. Cadets teaches you self reliance, self respect and responsibility, Grant told the cadets, adding they can approach life with confidence with what they learn at cadets teamwork, leadership, citi- zenship, self-confidence and physical fitness. The Navy League is a fed- erally sponsored program for nine to 12 year olds. Cadets is free even the uniforms but cadet parents pay $5 a year to be a member of the Navy League to support the efforts. De Rabbie said the pro- gram instills patriotism, a sense of duty, self-discipline and respect for others in a modern nautical environ- ment, based on sound naval traditions. The whole purpose of the total cadet movement is to make better citizens. It is not a recruiting tool for the mili- tary, De Rabbie said. The Acton Navy League Cadets began meeting in Acton this fall. Prior to that, they attended Navy Cadets in a small rented space in Milton, but because all but one of the officers are from Acton, and the Acton Legion offered free weekly space, the decision was made to relocate the Navy League Cadet pro- gram to Acton. CO De Rabbie said that approximately ten of the 20 Acton Cadets recently com- pleted their examinations and were promoted to cadets, receiving their certificates in a ceremony last Thursday at the Legion. While kids join cadets for free there are no dues or uniform costs parents and adults pay $5 a year to be a member of the Navy League to support the Cadets in the program, designed to instill patriotism, a sense of duty and respect for others in a modern nautical environ- ment, based on sound naval traditions.
