Frances Niblock photo Organic lawn, garden project to protect the Credit River A neighbourhood organic lawn and garden project in Halton Hills aimed at creating a healthier com- munity and protection for the Credit River was started this month. Home owners of the fondly referred to Mush- room Factory, a newly built community in George- town where a mushroom factory once stood, will be encouraged to adopt organic lawn and garden practices to minimize the chemical burden on the Credit River and watershed. The project was born when several Mushroom Factory residents approached Healthy Options for People and the Environment (H.O.P.E) for advice on how they could create a healthy community free of traditional lawn care chemicals such as cosmetic pesticides and synthetic fer- tilizers. H.O.P.E. has been working since 2001 to reduce cos- metic pesticide use in Halton Hills. Understanding that the community was new and the time was right to encourage new habits, a project work plan and supporting partners were established. Under the coordination of H.O.P.E. and with assis- tance from project partner - Protect Our Water and Environmental Resources (P.O.W.E.R.), the Mushroom Factorys $10,000 project received nearly $4,000 of financial support through Environment Canadas Eco- Action Community Funding Program. Project partners include Env i ronment Canada , P.O.W.E.R, Halton Region Naturally Green Pro- gram, Credit River Anglers Association, Credit Val- ley Conservation, Organic Landscape Alliance, and the Town of Halton Hills. Project activities include residential workshops for adults and children, a survey to gauge lawn and gardening prefer- ences, a community website and blog where residents can follow the project and learn organic how-tos. A pilot project got under- way in 2006 that included a lawn care survey of previous habits and understanding, educational workshops on organic lawn care and a blog: www.mushroomfactory.ca to help residents access infor- mation about the project.
