THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 2007 THE NEW TANNER 15 At a meeting recently I learned it costs approximate- ly $200 for each member who belongs to the Acton Seniors Centre. The only cost to you is an annual $20 membership fee, and a small fee for any program in which you participate. That partially helps cover our portion of the cost of heating, rent, staff, pro- grams etc. To cover the balance we are always trying to think up ways of raising funds to keep the Centre vibrant, and ask for ideas to make the Centre more appealing to more people 55 years of age and over. If you were thinking of joining and havent done so yet, perhaps you should stop in and pick up an information folder, or the latest newsletter. We have active and passive activities suitable for all people. With the amount of people 55 years of age and older living in Acton and the surrounding areas we know we arent reaching enough people. What would you like to see offered here? There was a very impor- tant meeting for anyone interested in the future of recreational facilities in Halton Hills at the Acton High School Wednesday, April 25. Many people do not realize but both Seniors Centres come under the umbrella of Parks and Rec- reation, so it is important that people attend and give their input on what they see as the future needs of Halton Hills. There is also a meeting today, Thursday, April 26 starting at 7p.m.in the Halton Hills Council Chambers at the Civic Cen- tre when you can hear a presentation highlighting the draft findings of the Rec- reation and Parks Strategic Action Plan. Donna has given me the results of the Evening Eu- chre last Wednesday. High Man was Henry Wedge, High Lady Lydia Dyball, Lone Hands Robert Fos- ter, and 2nd Man Donna Rowley, 2nd Lady Betty Brewer, and the Booby prize was won by Gerry Chafe. The next evening Euchre will be on May 16 at 7:15 p.m. Lunch was provided by Julie Conroy, Fran Morris Parents with children in the Halton District School Board are invited once again to participate in a School Effectiveness Survey avail- able on-line (www.hdsb.ca) beginning Monday, April 23 through to Friday, May 18, of this year. The survey asks parents to provide feedback about issues related to school effectiveness. The results will provide important data that will shape system and school effectiveness plan- ning for the improvement of student learning. The parent survey will ensure we have a more complete picture of our school system, says Wayne Joudrie, Director of Educa- tion for the Halton District School Board. The parent data will be analysed in correlation to the student, teaching and non-teaching staff surveys. The School Effectiveness Survey is an annual process for all three groups students, staff and parents. Beginning April 23, 2007 the survey can be accessed through the Halton Boards Womens Self Defence Taught by Women for Women Thursday May 3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th 7pm-9pm Only $75 for the full course 145 Mill St.E. The belated Easter dinner was well attended with 70 people enjoying the ham, and scalloped potatoes. It may not feel like spring, but some people dug out their Easter bonnets, and spring attire. Pat Frizzell won first prize for her hat, and Cathy Mundy second. The 50/50 was won by Wil- liam Charles, and the door prizes by Fern Jury, Real Tetreault, Dorothy Purkis and Marian Storey. The band, named Friends of the Hill, kept everyone tapping their toes, in fact some people even got up and danced. Marie Anderson was on the keyboard, Pat Frizzell on the sub tub drum, Reno Braida on the violin, Vern Denny the accordion, and Burl Burt rounded out the band on the guitar. Th i r t y - seven l ad i e s enjoyed the trip to St. Law- rence Market and came home laden down with bak- ing, and I know one lady was going especially to buy fish for her son. I bought some wonderful English cheese at one stall. If there is enough interest we might ar- range to go again in the fall on a Saturday morning when the other part of the market is open. We did decide on a name for the group, and will call ourselves, Gals on the Go. Peggy tells me eight people enjoyed the carpet bowling last Monday. The Black team with Pat Jones as captain was winning 9-3, but Marg Harings team ral- lied, and it ended up 10-all. I understand there was much laughter and lots of fun. Now its Spring, are you experiencing a Bad Hair Day? Bill Rowley, a well known hair stylist in To- ronto, will be here with all the answers on Monday, May 14 at 2p.m. We always have a deli- cious lunch on Fridays, but we desperately need some more volunteers. If there were enough people it would mean you might only have to help twice a month. If you are interested please leave a message for Marj Bartels. It would be a shame to see the lunches stop due to lack of help. Its a great social occasion for everyone. Thirteen members of the Acton Seniors Hiking Club went to Guelph and walked part of the Guelph Trail. It was a beautiful day, and everyone enjoyed the hike. They would welcome new hikers, and would like you to know that it really is a walk, and you should wear suitable boots or shoes. You do have to be a member of either the Acton or George- town Seniors Centres to join them. They are planning to hike around Centre Island on May 8. The bus will leave the Acton Seniors Centre at 9a.m. and return around 5:30p.m. The snack bars on the Island will not be open, so they will be taking a pic- nic lunch. The sign-up sheet is in the usual place. On a sad note, I see Hilde- gard Benedix passed away this week. She was always a very active member when she lived in Acton, and enjoyed the lunches and bingos on Fridays. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Renata Dzieciol and her family. Jeanne Burke was the happy winner of the weekly 50/50 draw. website at www.hdsb. ca and can be completed wherever Internet access is available home or work. Parents without access to the Internet may make ar- rangements through their childs school. Although the survey is anonymous, to gain ac- cess to the on-line survey parents must have their childs Ontario Education Number. This number is located at the top of the students Provincial Report Card. Parents will be able to respond to the survey once for each child in the Halton District School Board. EASTER PARADE: A bevy of beauties, Trina Noel, Cathy Munday, Fern Jory and Pat Frizzell paraded their creative Easter hats at the Acton Easter dinner last week. Pat won first prize, and Cathy took second. Julie Conroy photo On-line survey to collect data on school effectiveness
