Frances Niblock photo Organic gardening topic for workshops at Ecology Centre A workshop at Willow Park Ecology Centre (WPEC) on Sunday, April 29 will follow the progression of Organic Theme Gardens from fi eld- to-table as part of the Centres new organic garden project. The Centre, located on Mary St. in Norval, just off Hwy 7, is hosting four workshops on the organic theme. Experts will instruct on techniques for soil prepa- ration, planting methods, planting activities and seed starting. Participants will learn what they need to create their own vegetable gar- dens. Families, groups and indi- viduals are invited to attend the learning and sharing events and/or to sponsor a small plot, caring for it over the growing season. Accord ing to Tunde Otto-Harris, WPECs Coor- dinator, gardening locally and organically provides an opportunity to enjoy tastier food, save money and have a positive impact on our en- vironment a truly winning combination. As she introduced the vol- unteers who were receiving milestone service pins, Beitz quoted the late social activ- ist June Callwood. Callwood said that every act of giving is a sign of divinity. She would have loved all of you. Youre all of the people who give, and you may not even realize all that you do, but you do make an amazing difference and you make life better, Beitz said as she thanked the volunteers for helping in their unique and special ways. Dubeau began helping with the Meals-on-Wheels program with her daugh- ters Brownie pack, and has worked on various social service planning and devel- opment committees. After the ceremony Du- beau said being a volunteer has been a learning experi- ence. When I sat on various committees I got to learn a lot about health care, and when I delivered Meals-on- Wheels I got to know a lot of really interesting people. Ive enjoyed meeting all of the people and it makes you feel good that youre contributing to the com- munity. Other Acton long service award recipients include: Doug Anderson (20 years), Henry Kuipery (15), Ian Kilby (10), Margaret Daigle (5) George Hargrave (5).
