Not only did he not apolo- gize; he broke his promise to release the specifi c crite- ria upon which the previous grants had been determined. Clearly there were no objective and defensible criteria, and as such this was an egregious waste of taxpayers money. How else could you character- ize the expenditure of $20 million of the taxpayers money with absolutely no due diligence, no fi nancial background information requested of the grant recip- ients, and no fundamental evaluation as to whether or not a need actually existed? This is surely a question which the Auditor General of Ontario must address. And he must do so and report his fi ndings before October 10th to ensure that the McGuinty Liberal Gov- ernment is held to account for what has happened. For it appears on the surface that, with about fi ve months to go before a provincial election, a des- perate Minister of Finance, who also acts Chairman of the Ontario Liberal elec- tion campaign, allocated this money to the Min- ister of Citizenship. He then assigned him the task of shovelling the money out the door without any normal accountability pro- visions, in a blatant effort to generate support for the Lib- eral Party in that election. The people of Waterloo, Wellington, and Halton Hills will be outraged by this abuse of the public trust and the taxpayers money. And instead of generating support for the Ontario Lib- eral Party, as the Finance Minister/Campaign Chair had planned, this scan- dal will only expedite the Governments demise. MPP Ted Arnott criticizes government GONE FISHIN: Tyler Forrest, Aidan Simpson, and Kyle Forrest, all of Guelph, were enjoying fi shing for brown trout in the Eramosa River in Rockwood on Monday. The season opened last Saturday. Rebecca Ring Photo The Acton Employment Resource Centre will be hosting various events to help youth connect with local employers in the next six weeks. Special discussion sessions will be held at 4 p.m. on May 2, 9 and 23 on topics of particular interest to youth. What Employers are Looking For, as well as Interview Preparation and How to Keep Your Job, will be the subjects brainstormed at these free one-hour events. Students can phone to sign up or drop into the centre at 45 Mill Street in person. The workplace can be a new environment and has its own culture, youth ask excellent questions about employment expectations, labour laws and appropriate behaviours in the workplace. Laura Demeester, a youth worker and employment spe- cialist, is updating a student job posting binder daily as the employment opportunities start to appear over the next few weeks. Students can receive assistance with resume writing, cover letters and how to apply for apprenticeships. Local employers are asked to phone or come into the centre to post a job, or posting may be done by fax or email. Busi- nesses are encouraged to provide information about the skill set and qualifi cations needed for the employment opportunity. The centre also has many application forms for Halton Hills companies. Youth can fax or email resumes from the centre, which has workstations, a printer, photocopier and other resources for job searching. The Acton High School is very supportive of the youth em- ployment needs and have connected students with the centre and its resources. Youth need job experience and many young adults are saving for post secondary education. The centre appreciates the partnership with the local schools. It is benefi cial for youth, parents and employers to know the centre is here to help assist our youth to get jobs. May is hire a student month
