The Rotary Club of Acton honoured Councillor Jon Hurst and its own Bob McK- innon last Friday during its annual auction and dinner. Both men were presented with the Paul Harris Fellow- ship Award, the clubs highest honour. Rotarian Bill Beaton of- fered these remarks while introducing Hurst as this years non-Rotarian re- cipient. Rotarians are busy people we serve the community and assist our world interna- tionally. On occasions such as this evening, we recognize people with outstanding character, people with drive that make things happen, here in our community. This evening Acton Rotary wishes to rec- ognize such an individual with the highest award that Rotary International can present. We call this award The Paul Harris Fellowship in honour of the founder, Paul Harris back in 1905. Our honoree tonight is not a Rotarian. Many in Rotary wish that this individual was a Rotarian. Our selection for this distinction is a very busy man. Youve heard that ad- age if you want something done, ask a busy man. Its difficult to go on and tell you more without letting you know who Im talking about. Our man of distinction this evening is Halton Hills Councillor and Actons own Jon Hurst. Before I ask Jon to come forward and be recognized, let me tell you a little more. Born into a family with six siblings, he grew strong, independent and of good character. Later he found Maxine and married in 1965. They raised two children Ken and Kelly, who each gave Jon two grandchildren. Jon is a successful Acton business- man at Jon Hurst Electric. Jon is a past recipient of Actons Citizen of the Year award. Jon was a driving force be- hind both Actons Terry Fox Run and the Paul Muir Golf Tournament. Both groups raising many thousands of dollars annually. Jons father Joe was Clerk Administrator for the Town of Acton when he retired in 1973. Joe Hurst was a mem- ber of the inaugural council of Halton Hills on January 1, 1974. Jon has continued like his father to serve our com- munity. He was first elected to Halton Hills Council Nov. 10, 2003, serving a three-year term and in 2006, began his next four year term as Ward One Councillor. Jon serves the citizens of Acton well. He is approachable by his con- stituents and hes definitely Home Town Proud. This year Acton Rotary will celebrate the opening of our new Music Centre Band Shell in Prospect Park. Plans are underway for our dedication and grand opening celebra- tion. This project was assisted greatly by the strong efforts of Jon Hurst. When it came time to discuss the details of how the electrics would be handled Jon stepped up and said, Let me handle that. Let me handle the details. Ill work with Rotary and do all I can to see this great community project through to completion. Jon has worked tirelessly to complete all the electric activ- ity and now that its complete we must say, Thank you. Jon Hurst honoured by Acton Rotary PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS: Acton Councillor Jon Hurst (left) and Rotary Club of Acton member Bob MacKinnon were named Paul Harris Fellows the highest honour Rotary bestows at a ceremony at the Legion on Friday. Hursts honour is for a non-Rotary member. Ted Tyler photo As many as 27 very limber people will be at the Olde Hide House on Saturday morning, ready to use their well-toned bodies to help spell out the name Acton. The human spellers, all members of Actons Staying Alive Fitness, will undertake the pretzel-like contortions to show- case the many fitness benefits that Pilates provides all ages groups. Leanne Monaghan, co-owner of Staying Alive Fitness will lead the group on the main floor of the leather retailer for a picture that will accompany an article for Pilates Style magazine. Cogeco Cable will also tape the effort for a health and wellness segment hosted by Monaghan. Organizer Heather Langley said the event marks a number of anniversaries the third for Pilates Day worldwide, the one-year anniversary of Staying Alive, and the up-coming 27th anniversary of the Olde Hide House. If we have the floor space, well use 27 people to spell out the letters in Acton, but if we dont have the space, we use 17 people, Langley said, adding theyll use moves like the plank and swimming to help form the letters to spell out Acton, beginning at 10 a.m. Body language spells Acton
