By Rebecca Ring Flags to honour Vimy Ridge C o u n c i l p l a n s t o commemorate the 90th an- niversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge with more flags and ensigns at the Rockwood Cenotaph. The estimated cost is $3593.71. The Guelph/Eramosa Heri- tage Committee will pay $1000 and the Township will pay the rest. The fl ags will add esthet- ic value and show respect for what was accomplished by those named on the ceno- taph, said Councillor Doug Breen. The proposed fl ags and ensigns are those that Cana- dians fought under in World War I and II; The Royal Canadian Army, Air Force, Navy and the Union Jack. EWAG NEWS The committees budget is small but it is important to recognize this anniversary, as Vimy Ridge is seen as the birth of Canada, said Mayor Chris White. Historians say that af- ter the battle, waged from April 9 to 12, 1917, Can- ada emerged from under the shadow of Britain and felt capable of greatness. Canadian troops earned a formidable reputation on the world stage because of their stunning success. Rockwood Cemetery Fees increased The Guelph Cemetery Commission presented its new fee schedule to council. There are increases for all interment rights, fees and cremation, except for the interment fees for a small child. The largest increase is for a four-by-ten foot grave, which went from $1100 in 2006 to $1200. Breen asked for specifics on packages already purchased. Will they be charged the new interment fess? he asked. Clerk/CAO Janice Shep- pard was asked to get the information. White said the cemetery has been running at a defi cit and these yearly increases are intended to address this. Councillor Reta Moyer asked for a price comparison with other cemeteries. Watson Rd. and Jones Baseline parking prob- lems addressed Council agreed to review the Township Parking By- Law, specifi cally for Jones Baseline and Watson Rd. at County Rd. 124. Breen made the motion in response to complaints about people parking on the roadways to slip into Guelph Lake Con- servation Area. He wants No Parking signs erected and enforced. He also sug- gested contacting the GRCA about the problem. We intend to sit down with the GRCA on many issues and this can certainly be one of them, Mayor White said. After all, it is lost revenue to them. Economic Development Committees goals Councillor Moyer pre- sen ted the Economic Development Committees plans to council. Their main objectives are to promote the township as a whole, encourage people to buy local goods and services, and attract visitors to local businesses. She said the Buy Local, Buy Fresh publication and the Guelph- Wellington Visitors Guide are two good vehicles. The committee wants to encour- age a wider distribution and promotion. The Rockwood Eramosa Business Asso- ciation is invited to the committees next meeting to see how they can work together. They also plan to contact fi lm production companies and provide them with promotion pack- ages for goods and services in the area. Guelph/ Eramosa Council chips ROCKWOODThe Miller
