START THE NEW YEAR OFF WITH GOOD GRADES If your child is struggling being challenged enough, FOR FALL ENROLL NOW FOR SUMMER Walking to cure diabetes The Juvenile Diabetes Re- search Foundations Walk to Cure Diabetes takes place June 17 at Guelph Lake Con- servation Area. Rockwood resident Cathy Kelly, owner of C.K. Coverings, will join her family and friends in the walk to raise funds for re- search and support for those living with diabetes. That includes members of my family, says Kelly, Over 200,000 Canadians are af- flicted with juvenile (Type 1) diabetes, many of them children. Diabetes is the lead- ing cause of kidney failure and lower limb amputation and a leading cause of adult blindness, nerve damage and heart disease. It is the underlying cause of 50% of all heart attacks, and 5% of those who suffer strokes have diabetes. Insulin is not a cure. Canada has the third highest occurrence rate of Type 1 diabetes in children 14 years or younger in the world and the Type 1 diabetes occur- rence rate is rising by three to five per cent per year; the greatest rise occurring in five to nine-year olds. To support Kelly or any other team, join the walk or donate, visit www.jdrf. ca/walk. Spring Fair Home and Garden Show cancelled The Rockwood and Dis- trict Lions Club has cancelled plans for a Spring Fair Home and Garden Show, June 14 to 17. Lion Ken McNab says the main reason is no major sponsor came forward. The costs were just not feasible, especially renting the tent as Rockwood has no arena, he says. There was also a shortage of committed ven- dors. The minimum number needed to break even is 30. The carnival company was also not available to provide rides and games. It didnt pan out this year but were working on it for next year and hope to get it off the ground. Triathlon at Guelph Lake The annual triathlon hosted by Trisport Canada will take place June 23 and 24. You can watch or join the swimming, biking, and running races. There are different sports combinations and levels, including the Try-a-Triath- lon, which is a 375m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run, or the Sprint Triathlon, a 750m swim, 19km cycle, and 5km run. There is also a Kids Fun Run and festivi- ties throughout the day. Visit www.trisportcanada.com for more information and to register. Mmmm chicken ROCKWOOD Ring Around with Rebecca Ring By Rebecca Ring Rockwood is ready to celebrate Pioneer Day this Saturday, June 9. This year marks its 30th anniversary. Pioneer Day began with four people - Marla Reid, Dave Madsen, John MacLeod and Barb Winnick - wanting to celebrate the 130th anniver- sary of Eramosa. Reid is still hard at it. She says they were wrong about the date back in 1977. Local historian Lloyd Dyer told her that the 130th anniversary was actually the following year, so they did it all again. Everyone had so much fun that it has continued almost every year since. Reid says she could not do it alone and thanks all her helpers, including Lisa Logan, Dr. Claire Maine and staff at the Rockwood Vet Clinic. The fun begins on Friday evening with guitarist/singer Ian Reid putting on a live show at Lions Waterside Park on Main St. S., at 7 pm. The audience is invited to participate. Saturday begins with the rubber duck race at 10 a.m., also at Lions Waterside Park. Proceeds go to the Guelph Wish Fund for Children. The ever-popular parade will form at Rockmosa Com- munity Centre at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday.Children are invited to decorate their bi- cycles and join in. The parade will set out at 12 noon and head down Main St., onto Alma and up Inverness to Lloyd Dyer Park. The fun continues at the park with childrens activi- ties, the Lioness fish pond, booths, demonstrations, reptiles, songbirds, the fire departments safety educa- tion trailer, a penny table and food vendors, including La Veille Auberge, The Purple Pig, Rockwood No Stars Womens Fastball BBQ, and the Village Sweet Shop. New this year is Mr. Twister, featuring balloons, cotton candy and popcorn. Ian Reid will play again at 2:30 p.m. at Lloyd Dyer Park and host an open stage, so bring your instruments and practice crooning. A licensed outdoor dance with a DJ rounds out the festivities at 8 p.m. Proceeds from drink sales will go to Animals Homeward Bound, a charity that helps pets find homes. Pioneer Day coordinator Marla Reid is looking for more help with the dance. To help or to participate in the open stage, call her at 519-856-9819. We love a parade Pioneer Day all set ALL GREEN THUMBS: The Rockwood Garden Club met at Greenscape Nursery recently to learn about growing a colourful garden all season long. The meal deal includes a barbequed chicken half, baked beans, coleslaw, rolls and home- made pies. A childrens menu is available.
