Organizer Marla Reid was very happy with the turn out for this popular event. The day began with the Rubber Ducky Race at Lions Waterside Park. First prize, a family gift basket, went to Nancie Daymon; second prize, a pet gift basket from the Rockwood Vet Clinic, went to Cam Mullen; third prize, a handmade quilt and toy, went to Crystal Logan; fourth prize, an All-in-a-Bas- ket gift basket, went to David Logan; fi fth prize, a gift cer- tifi cate from the Rose Garden went to Clare Maine; sixth prize, a plush toy and clock from Rockwood Pharmacy went to Paul Sim; seventh prize, a gift certifi cate from Saunders Bakery, went to doubly lucky Clare Maine. According to race organizer Lisa Logan, the event raised $1279 for the Guelph Wish Fund for Children. The parade was next. Plaques and cash prized were awarded for the best fl oats, best decorated bikes and coolest antique and classic cars. Reid said deciding the winners was very difficult as there were so many great entries. First place for the floats went to Barnyard, by Lisa Logan and friends; sec- ond place went to Finding Nemo, by Animals Home- ward Bound, and third went to the antique car with Tiger by the Rockwood Karate Dojo. A unique fl oat for this year was a giant birthday cake for Reids 60th birthday, which fell on Pioneer Day. At the finish, friend Jevan Dawe jumped out of the cake, dressed in a tux, holding a bottle of champagne and two glasses. First place for the best car went to Dave Knox for his Bonneville; second went to Lisa Logan for Bugsy; third went to Steve Archibald for Hot Rod. For best decorated bicycle, Zachary Gunther and Mack- enzie Berdi tied for first place; Emma Stiles and Jake Gunther tied for second; William Stiles and Alyssa Sparling tied for third place. The days events continued at Lloyd Dyer Park. All the booths did very well and the open stage with Ian Reid went very well. The No Stars made some money with their barbecue and the Penny Table went really well. Joanne Blomberg gets it ready all year and proceeds go the Rural Womens Support Pro- gram, says Reid. The final big event was the evening dance at Lloyd Dyer Park. Reid says it went smoothly with over 300 peo- ple attending. She was able to recoup costs from entry fees and has enough left over to get next years event started. The dance was amply policed by security guards and two privately paid OPP offi cers. The bar earned about $1400, which went to Ani- mals Homeward Bound to help stray pets fi nd homes. Reid had lots of help from friends and family, especially her partner Jim Graham. Thats how it works out so well. I would love to have even more help next year if anyone is interested, she says. Major helpers in- cluded the Guelph/Eramosa Firefighters, which led the parade, controlled traffi c and provided equipment. The township erected the snow fence, prepared the park, and ROCKWOODThe Miller delivered the tables loaned by the Rockwood Conservation Area. Ray Death loaned the tent. Lisa Logan organized the Rubber Ducky Race and more. Richard Turner from the Bahai Faith hosted the childrens games and rac- es, and awarded ribbons to winners. Animals Home- ward Bound and staff of the Rockwood Veterinary Clinic helped organize, set up games and hosted the bar at the dance. Perfect weather for a perfect Pioneer Day BARNYARD BUDDIES: This Barnyard Float won fi rst prize in Rockwoods Pioneer Day parade last Saturday. It is the creation of Lisa Logan and friends. Rebecca Ring Photo BIG 60 BIRTHDAY CAKE: Friends surprised Pioneer Day organizer Marla Reid with a giant birthday cake fl oat. The best part was when a man jumped out of the cake, sporting a tuxedo, champagne and two glasses. When it fi nally spilled its candy, the kids went crazy collecting the goods. Rebecca Ring Photo
