Although local church officials held a rainy, cold Pentecost service at the bandshell in June, Sundays ribbon-cutting ceremony was the official opening of the facility that Rotary Club of Acton members gave to Acton as a gift, marking Rotarys 100th anniversary in 2005. Rotarian Bill Beaton said the project would not have come to fruition without the hard work of the approxi- mately 20 Acton Rotarians and a very generous com- munity that gave its time, talents, supplies and ser- vices. Our community stepped up to the plate our citizens are here for Acton Rotary every time we have a fund- raiser, Beaton said, adding the bandshell is unique, just like Acton. Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong said Rotarians worked long and hard to make the project happen. This is the result of their discussions about what they can do for public service, Chong said as he asked all Rotarians in the crowd to stand up and take a much- deserved bow. These people do this, week in and week out, with no recognition from the community often. They work hard to raise this mon- ey its relentless work, Chong said that benefits the entire Town. Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette noted they were celebrating history Can- adas 140th birthday and making history. There will be a lot of memories made here at the this bandshell its a lot more than just wood and nails it is the opportuni- ties for people to come here and perform and make memories we have Rotary to thank for that, Bonnette said, before he and MP Chong cut up two huge birthday cakes courtesy of Sobeys for the crowd. Following the ribbon cut- ting, the stage came to life with a lively demonstration by the Everybody Dance Club from Robert Little School, followed by sets by a new local band, Trees, a performances by Cain and Abel, and the Bluesers. Frances Niblock photo Halton Region officials are praising the provinces plan to invest $17.5 billion in public transit. This is an encourag- ing announcement as it will address some of our infrastructure needs that regional council raised dur- ing our Fairness for Halton campaign, said Regional Chair Gary Carr. I applaud the Ontario government for listening to Halton residents and the people of Ontario. The plan includes: Expanding service and capacity on existing GO train corridors; Increasing transportation on highway 407 through Halton, Peel and York; A Pearson Airport to Union Station rail link; A detailed implementa- tion plan by the Greater Toronto Transportation Au- thority. An expectation that municipalities will not con- tribute capital funding for the projects identified in the $17.5 billion plan. Carr said the province has laid the groundwork for growth in the region. Because of this, we will need more services to move our residents throughout the GTA.
