10 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2007 I read the comments of K. Buchanan and would like very much to respond to the words. I hear what Buchanan has said, and I agree of course that animals should not be harmed. I think, however, there are circumstances that are exceptions to the rule. I ask this of Buchanan and anyone else who may share the same opinion as them: What if this was your small child that this pit bull was attacking? Would you think, Oh that poor lost little pit bull, shoo, shoo, doggie dont eat my child dear little pit bull please stop attacking.... as you stand and do nothing but watch your child get seriously mauled? I highly doubt it. I did what I needed to do to protect my kids (my dogs). In the terror of the moment, survival instinct kicked in and that shovel was the first thing that I was able to get, and my heart ached as I did try and release the pit bull from my dogs neck. I was raised in a loving family and violence was never an option for resolution of any matter. I do not think that my actions/reactions to this matter makes me a violent offender. As a matter of fact, our family is one that continuously takes pride in community involvement and support. I will continue to be active in our community regardless of what Buchanan thinks of me or my actions on that terrifying day. To the editor; Who would ever guess that there would be a Blue Grass jamboree in Eramosa. But there was! And you will never guess where it happened. First clue: it was in Era- mosa Township. Second clue: it happened in small village whose letter begins with E. The Everton folks were first treated to a county- style strawberry social out on the church lawn, along with classical violin solos played by the village Suzuki students. But then there was a change in the mood as new- comers Jeanette and Bruce Clarida brought out their dulcimer and banjo for some southern music. Soon the Prieb family trio had the crowd clapping with their country folk tunes; son Brandon on the spoons kept up the beat for his parents Mary and Bill. Off the street came Geor- gina and Cam Urban, adding a new music twist to the program with their unique combo of a big bass viola and a musical saw. With such a talented group of performers, it wasnt long before they began to have and impromptu jam ses- sion. The whole crowd was soon clapping and stomping to the beat, with some chil- dren doing a joyful do-si-do under the trees. Was this our first peek at a new group The Strawberry Jam (boree) Group? S. Drijber Rockwood. The environment is an issue that has grown in importance on the public agenda. Con- cerns about environmental issues are on the rise. An overwhelming 85% of Ca- nadians are concerned about climate change. Last month, I brought a recommendation to Council that a Halton Hills Green Plan be established, and that the four pillars of the strategy to be PARE (Practical, Affordable, Reasonable and Enforceable). Your Council unanimously supported the Resolution. Our findings and recommendations should be completed by November. We will be seeking input from local experts, Town staff, and the community at large in the development of ideas and strategies. At the end of the day, this will be a working document. * * * This is also a time to be careful about insect bites. If you hike in the woods, be cautious. It is not just mosquitoes that you have to worry about, but also ticks. Lyme disease is a very real threat. I know of one local businessman who suffers from this disease. Keith Poullos has been very dili- gent on spreading the word on this dreadful disease, and now heads up a support group for the GTA. * * * Congratulations to Father Bob and all the parishioners at the Parish of St. Josephs Church in Acton, who re- cently celebrated the churchs 150th anniversary. * * * I am pleased to announce that the Mayors Annual Heritage Golf Tournament that was held in June raised over $36,000.00. That is a record. Special thanks to all of the volunteers and spon- sors for making it a huge success. * * * Happy retirement to Acton Aqua Duck swim coaches Gerry Ockenden and his daughter Julie Mathews. Gerry has volunteered over 24 years for the kids in Acton, and Julie has coached for 15 years. Gerry is now a Public School Trustee for Wards One and Two. * * * The Acton Rotary Band- shell is now officially open in Prospect Park. You did a wonderful job! It looks fantastic! * * * Lastly, I would like to con- gratulate two of my favorite people: my parents, Lou and Madeleine Bonnette, on cel- ebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary! * * * Keeping it real! I can be reached by telephone at 905- 873-2601, ext. 2342, or by e-mail at mayor@haltonhills. ca. One year ago in The New Tanner: Harvey Sheppard, 32, of Etobicoke died in George- town Hospital, 12 hours after searchers police, family members and other swim- mers found his body in eight feet of water in Fairy Lake, about 15 minutes after he went missing. Service Canada con- t r a c t e d H a l t o n H i l l s Community Support and Information (HHCSI) to open and operate an Acton Em- ployment Resource Centre on Mill Street, with a two-year budget of $548,701. Two Acton women charged with leaving their 97-year- old mother and grandmother in a sweltering car while they shopped said they are sorry it was an innocent mistake. Five years ago in The New Tanner: Only Doug Neary, a poor swimmer, knows why he tried to swim across Fairy Lake. The 44-year-old Hornby resident remained unrespon- sive in critical condition in a Brampton hospital, days after his body was found in murky chest-deep water in Fairy Lake. Halton Region imposed a mandatory water ban on outdoor water uses like car washing and lawn watering to ensure theres enough water in the reservoirs to han- dle peak residential demand and emergency uses. A three-year grant from the Trillium Foundation means Actons Off The Wall youth centre and one in Georgetown will not close as feared. Beat the rush! ORDER NOW!! For all your cabinetry needs. Marchesano ??????????? ?? ?????? ????? ???????????????????? ?????????????? ??? ??? I love animals, all animals. I cant even kill a fly. My intention was not to kill or seriously maim this dog (who had not suffered any trauma through this), it was to save my dogs from death. I did what I had to do to save my babies. I think any other lov- ing dog owner would have done what they had to do to protect their animals too. I question the lack of action of Buchanan allowing their dog to be seriously injured while they watched. How un- fortunate for that poor dog. I do want to say, however, that What would you have done? I agree with Buchanans com- ment on alternative methods of action. I should have called animal control when I saw the dog initially. That is a fair statement. I regret this deeply. It would have been the best move. I assumed the dog was gone and that was my biggest mistake. Incidentally, the 2 by 4 the workman picked up was not used to hurt the pit bull, it never touched the dog. The workman picked it up to protect himself from the attack and to help corral my dogs to safety. My apologies to anyone who I offended by trying to save my dogs.
