The motion approved by the Board consisted of three components approval of the $387,097,394 operating budget; a $24,357,415 capital budget, and a legal fees budget of $250,000. This brings the total 2007-08 Halton District School Board budget to $411,454,809. The Halton District School Board bud- get is developed following the release by the Ministry of Education of the upcom- ing years grant or revenue structure. The Grants for Student Needs (GSNs) were announced in March this year. The context for the development of the 2007-08 Halton District School Board budget was to prioritize, align and dedicate resources to the operational plans from the Boards new Strategic Plan, says Steven Parfeniuk, superintendent of business ser- vices and treasurer for the Halton Board. The 2007-08 Halton District School Board operating and capital budget is a reflection of the Boards commitment to putting into operation the objectives of the strategic plan, as well as to the Boards on-going commitment and investment in school capital infrastructure. The budget document represents the priorities and objectives of trustees and administrative staff, and is responsive to the diverse requirements of the students we serve, says Wayne Joudrie, director of education for the Board. This budget has been developed with a focus and em- phasis on the Boards Strategic Plan which clearly states the Boards commitment to students. The resulting operational plans developed and approved by the Board further highlight the three areas of focus students, staff and system. On behalf of the Halton District School Board, I would like to express thanks to the staff who have spent a great deal of time, effort and skill in preparing this document, says Gillian Tuck Kutarna, Board Chair. As a result of the additional time spent providing trustees with a com- prehensive overview and responding to our comments and questions, we were able to approve the 2007-08 budget with confidence. The recently formed la- dies group named Gals on the Go had a great re- sponse to the Mohawk trip. There are 47 ladies signed up. Luckily Mohawk was able to accommodate the additional people. Please be at the Seniors Centre on Monday July 30 by 5:45 p.m. as the bus will leave at 6 p.m. sharp. We will be leaving Mohawk at 10:15 p.m., so we shouldnt be too late getting home. It is very important that the ladies who signed their names on the original list come in and pay, as a de- posit has to be made, and I dont want to find that the totals are incorrect at a later date. With such a great re- sponse I am now wondering about the feasibility of a trip to Woodbine for either the Standardbred or Harness races as they stay open un- til November. I am getting more details this week. One great idea for the end of September is a steam train ride and lunch that runs from Orangeville to the Forks of the Credit. Look for a sign up sheet when Yvonne Casswell has more details. Pat Frizzell asked me to mention that there will be no Good Food Box or- ders in August. That is great idea that really took off. There are often 50 boxes of fresh assorted vegetables and fruits being picked up each week. There were three new players at the Bid Euchre this week. Eileen and Hen- ry Wedge usually play on a Wednesday evening, but this week decided to play the Thursday afternoon Bid Euchre, too. Betty Brewer was enjoying the game also. I hope I dont frighten them off, like the last man I mentioned. We havent seen him since! Muriel Dzieria had the first mooner, quickly followed by Mae Milton and Joan Bateman. Things are quieter over the summer, but we never close except for the civ- ic holidays. There is still Canasta and cribbage on Thursday mornings, and in the afternoon Bid Euchre, summer exercise class on Wednesday, and Friday mornings shuffleboard be- fore lunch, followed by bingo in the afternoon. On the third Wednesday of the month we have regular games of Euchre in the eve- ning. You can pop in on a hot day, pick up a book and enjoy the air conditioning. There is always someone to talk to. Several things to note in September are: - fashion show, the birthday tea cel- ebrating birthdays that fall in August and September, our first social evening din- ner of the Fall season, the Seniors Information Show- case on Tuesday September 18 from 10 to 3:00 p.m., where many groups come together under one roof to help with health needs, questions and problems. It is always very informative. We are doing this in part- nership with Links2Care. The Acton Seniors are also using this opportunity to have their Open House that day. If you are looking for a day trip and change of scenery, the travel desk is always open Monday and Friday mornings, and Betty or one of her committee members will be happy to help you plan something. It was nice to see Flo Rochers two childrens daughters Marlene and son Rick with his wife Jane, at the Friday lunch last week. They were here to place two leaves on the tree in memory of their parents Flo and Charlie Rocher. Flo spent so much time and energy at the Centre. She and her friends pre- pared the lunches for many years and ran the Bingo. The leaves were purchased from donations made by the Acton Senior Centre members, with the balance going to the Cancer Society as was the families wish. Maxine Burtons cousins Art and Dora Cuthbertson, are visiting her from Monc- ton, New Brunswick and joined us for the lunch and Bingo. Last weeks 50/50 was not won, and this weeks winner was Paul Thompson.
