At least the pit bull had the excuse of not knowing better. The writer of the letter seems confused about who the victims are. The person has so much sympathy for the attacking dog and none for Ms. Turks who were hospitalized. She or he calls Ms. Turkss dogs property, while the attacking animal is described as a martyr. It is all well and good to feel sorry for an abused ani- mal, but not when that animal causes pain and suffering to others, then ones sympathies must change unless a person is a masochist. I can only believe that someone with water in her or his veins could stand by and watch a pet be- ing attacked and do nothing. Unbelievably, though, the writer condemns Ms. Turk for hitting the attacking dog even when she was only try- ing to get its mouth off of her dogs necks. Does the writer suggest that in the seconds needed to save her animals lives Ms. Turk should have stood there and said hmm while it clamped down on another dog? The writer is proud that he/she was too gutless to help his or her own dog. Is this now the Canadian way? Should we, the next time we see an old lady being mugged stop to think about what is best to do? Would a dog hesitate to defend its owner even to the extent of loss of life? No! And no again! I say grab whatever is handy and show your pet that you love it and are as faithful to it as it is to you with every blow you can rein on that crazy attacking animal until it lets go or breathes its last. Perhaps Ms. Turk should not have gone walking on her own property, the writer says. If she hadnt, the dog might have laid in wait for some- one elses pets and attacked them instead. Even better, the writer seems to suggest, in order to protect the mad in the world why dont we all just stay home. That way, the violent will never have to commit another crime and the world will be a victimless place. All in all, I felt that Ms. Turk was rather noble, for nowhere in her statements did she seem vindictive, or say she wanted the animal put down. The fact that it is dead is the fault of the anti- pit bull legislation passed by our elected officials and the selfish, careless owner who was too cheap to sterilize the dog. To add insult to injury the owner was then too cow- ardly to claim the dog after it had run up a bill of over a thousand dollars. The only thing sadder than that pitbulls fate is the pathetic people who make excuses for pathetic owners. Kal Durgan, Georgetown Who was pit-bull attack victim?
