On Friday, 75 children each held a gigantic yellow rope and walked from the camps at the 4th Line to Prospect Park for one of the many outings they get to experience this summer. - Angela Tyler photo Funeral for Rockwood couple killed by drunk driver By Frances Niblock While family and friends of Andy and Nettie Miller gathered at the Rockmosa Community Centre yes- terday (Wednesday) to say their final farewells to the couple, the allegedly drunk driver who pushed their car into an on-coming GO Train last Thursday sat in a cell at the Maplehurst Detention Centre in Milton. The Millers, in their mid- 60s, and their dog Flora, who was also killed in the crash, were on their way to their boat docked at Port Credit when their car, stopped at a level rail crossing on Trafalgar Road near Derry Road, was struck from behind by a silver-gray Mercedes which then con- tinued across the tracks and hit another car whose driver was not injured. The Millers were pro- nounced dead at the scene, and the Mercedes driver was taken to hospital, treat- ed and released into police custody, charged with two counts of impaired driving causing death, two counts of dangerous driving causing death and refusing to pro- vide a breath sample. The Millers, who had lived in Rockwood for more than 10 years after retiring, are survived by four chil- dren and 10 grandchildren. Following their funeral service, they were interned at Rockwood Cemetery. Ingram Rahim Bakhsh, 28, of Milton, appeared in the Superior Court of Jus- tice for a bail hearing on Monday and was remanded to July 30. Peel police confirm that Bakhsh has two trials pend- ing in Peel in connection with alcohol-related inci- dents in their jurisdiction. Bakhsh will be tried in November on charges of failing to provide a breath sample and driving with over 80-milligrams of al- cohol in 100-millilitres of blood relating to his arrest in February 2006. He also faces trial in June 2008 on charges of impaired driving and having over 80-millilitres of alcohol in 100-millitres of blood in connection with an incident in March 2006. Well things are much quieter at the Acton Seniors Centre at the moment, but some activities still run. If you havent been to our Centre and are passing, by please stop in and introduce yourself. The people at the front desk are always happy to see a smiling face, as it helps to pass the day. At the moment you can get a complimentary member- ship which is good until the end of August. Friday is a good day to visit, and you can get lunch at the same time. You do have to let the lunch committee know at least the day before. If you are new in town, its a great way to meet new people and make friends. The travel desk is open every Monday and Friday morning, and one of the committee members is al- ways there to help with information. They even have information on trips that take you away for several days. There is at least one trip planned every month up until November. It makes life a lot easier when you can sit back and let someone else do the planning, driving and parking. Just a reminder from Pat there will be no Good Food Boxes in August. The Wednesday evening Euchre was well attended and Fran tells me Henry Wedge had the Lone Hand, the High Man was George Ismond, and the High Lady Eileen Wedge, Robert Foster was 2nd Man, and May Laing 2nd Lady, while the Boobie was won by Don Milton. The next game will be on Wednesday, Au- gust 15 at 7:15 p.m. The Thursday afternoon group of Bid Euchre players enjoyed a great afternoon, and Catherine Hunt had the only Mooner. It was nice to see Bob playing again. I guess I didnt frighten him away by mentioning him a couple of weeks ago. If you have any questions about the various services available for Seniors in North Halton, you should try to attend the Seniors Information Showcase on Tuesday September 18 from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. in the Acton Community Hall. It is going to be hosted by the Acton Seniors Recreation Centre, the Georgetown Seniors Centre and Links2Care. Hopefully there will be representatives there from many different groups and services. Acton will be us- ing this opportunity to have their Open House on that day, and will have lunch available. There are still chicken dinner tickets available at the front desk for August 2 and 15. They are for dinner at Andys and By gosh, the price is right. On a sad note, the flag was flying at half mast when I arrived at the Cen- tre on Thursday morning. It was lowered to mark the passing of one of our members Ruth Payne. An- other long time former member, George Williams, also passed away. George always enjoyed playing shuffleboard.
