Thats the option picked by the com- mittee and then endorsed by Regional Council in July. Acton Councillor Clark Somerville, vice-chair of Haltons Health and So- cial Services committee, said because the issue was forwarded to the budget committee, there was little debate about harm reduc- tion, which is drug policy and programming that tries to reduce harms associated with substance abuse without requiring abstinence. Harm reduction has been shown to work in other ar- eas, but I said we needed statistics to show if the pro- gram is really a viable thing that we should be spending money on, Somerville said on Monday, adding that in- formation will be available during Decembers budget talks. Regional staff said POSSE Project offers a valuable ser- vice to vulnerable youth in North Halton, and is unique to the north because Oakville and Burlington dont have high-risk youth outreach services. POSSE Project began in 2004 as a one-year Hepa- titis C prevention project funded by Health Canada, and it grew to include harm reduction, peer outreach and human rights programs that cost approximately $120,000 annually to run in Acton, Georgetown and Milton. To expand Region-wide would require a budget of $360,000 a year. Somerville said whoever ends up offering the harm reduction program, he wants assurances that accurate in- formation and messages will be offered. Ive never had a problem with needle exchanges or harm reduction programs because if you prevent one case of AIDS or HIV you can literally save the public health system millions of dollars, he said, adding he would have difficulty with safe injection sites. The number of new needles distributed by Halton for in- travenous drug use was down last year and the number of needles used to inject steroids increased. The la tes t repor t on Haltons needle exchange program showed needles were provided to clients on 462 occasions last year, and staff provided advice, information and counselling on 173 occasions, bringing the total number of client contacts to 635, down from 672 the previous year. In Acton, staff had a total of eight contacts, including three who exchanged needles used for intramuscular injec- tion of steroids, and five who exchanged needles used for intravenous injection of il- licit drugs. TIPS BBQ: Crime Stoppers directors Laura Gillespie and Glenn Matsuto served a drive-though hot dog to TD Canada Trust Acton branch manager Hugh Calderwood on Saturday when the branch hosted a barbecue for Crime Stoppers of Halton, a not- for-profit group that gives cash rewards for anonymous tips that help solve crimes. Frances Niblock photo The Ministry of Labour is investigating an indus- trial accident at Dufferin Aggregates Acton quarry that injured a dump truck on Friday morning. Halton police said the 38- year-old driver from Caledon was attempting to pull a tarp over his load when he lost his footing and fell four feet from the truck, injuring his back when he hit the ground. He was taken to hospital, treated and released. Hit and run Alert neighbours led police to a silver/grey PT Cruiser that fled the scene after side- swiping a Volkswagen Jetta parked on McDonald Boule- vard just before 9 on Sunday night. About 15 minutes later, neighbours of the victim spotted the suspect car in the driveway of a Lasby Lane residence and told police. Police believed some- one was home, but no one answered the door. They said because no one saw the driver, the vehicles owner would be charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident. Attempt B&E Would-be thieves tried several means but didnt get into the Double Happiness Restaurant on Queen Street overnight Sunday/Monday. Police said the rear door was pushed in slightly, appar- ently after being kicked, and the deadbolt was damaged. A piece of concrete, that police could not fingerprints on, was also used to try to break in. Damages total approximately $100. Klepto released A klepto who once worked in Acton was released on bail following a court appearance in Milton last Wednesday on a charge of stealing a package of prunes from the Great Canadian Superstore. This person has worked, I believe, in Acton, Milton and Georgetown for differ- ent places, one being Kelso, another being the Gellert Centre, and shes like a klepto (one who has uncontrollable impulse to steal), said Act- ing Detective Sergeant Kevin Baird. She appears in court again on August 20. Still in custody A 28-year-old Milton man charged with impaired driv- ing in connection with the deaths of a Rockwood couple remains in custody following an appearance in the Superior Court of Justice in Milton on Monday.
