Opening day at skatepark... Continued from page 1 OFFICICAL OPENING: After almost six years of hard work, Actons 3 Musketears Skatepark officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Wednesday, attended by many of the people politicians, community members, local businesses that helped make the already well-used facility a reality. Frances Niblock photo SMOOTH MOVES: West 49 skateboarding experts put on a demonstration for a large crowd at the official opening of the 3 Musketears Skatepark in Acton last Wednesday. Frances Niblock photo FOUNDING FAMILIES: The 3 Musketears Skatepark officially opened last Wednesday with a reception to thank the donors, including family members of Travis Toth, Rory Dick and Mark Everson who were killed in a train/ car accident south of Acton in 2000. Through an annual golf tournament, their families donated $30,000 to the skatepark project. Frances Niblock photo been a long six years since the idea of the facility was first raised (by McKen- zie-Smith Bennett teacher Lynda Bowen). Outside at the ribbon-cut- ting ceremony, Bonnette told the families of the 3 Musketears that their loved ones would not be forgot- ten. Some good has come from your tragedy because youth today can participate in a sport that your three boys loved so muchand what better way for the young people of our com- munity to remain physically active than skateboarding at this magnificent park, Bonnette said, noting local youth had input into the design, planning and fund- raising of the facility. Actons Deb Fendley, chair of the ASAP com- mittee, was confident from the beginning that goal of $100,000 was not too am- bitious. This is such a gener- ous community I was pleasantly pleased, but I dont think I was surprised because Acton is such a generous community, Fendley said, adding lo- cal Town councillors and staff also deserve praise for making the project a real- ity, although at times she wondered if the park would ever be built. After the ceremony, ASAP fundraising commit- tee chair, Regional Ward 1/2 Councillor Clark Somer- ville also marvelled at how fast the money was raised. Acton and area is a com- munity with a lot of heart when there is a project they believe in, they get behind it wholeheartedly and the money was raised in about 11 weeks and that speaks to the heart of Acton, Somerville said. Each of the donors and members of the ASAP com- mittee received a framed print of a skateboarder at the new park and then headed outside for an official rib- bon-cutting ceremony. Actons Gayle McIntosh, one of the organizers of the annual 3 Musketears Golf Tournament, said about a year after the boys were killed, there was concern among their families and friends that the teens would be forgotten with time be- cause people felt awkward talking about them. So, we thought about what we could do to keep their memory alive so these boys will never be forgotten and I believe today that has happened, McIntosh said, thanking everyone who has supported the golf tourna- ment over the years. This years tournament is August 25, and half of the proceeds will be donated to the skatepark for on-going maintenance, and the other half to Actons Off The Wall drop-in centre. Following the ribbon-cut- ting, members of the West 49 Flow Riders staged a demonstration and then the facility was officially open for everyone.
