Mrs. Turk herself stated in her rebuttal letter she could have done things dif- ferently. I felt the matter was at rest, but you responded using name calling (I believe the word gutless was used) and all the other points which I guess you could have taken out of context--freedom of press/speech right? However, I am glad to see someone else pointing out (as I was from the start) that the pitbull law needs changing--the dog gets punished, not the owner -- you can choose to do nothing or you can help the animal. Dogs are not humans - it is up to the humans to train the dogs intelligently and kindly without harm. The blame is on the human owner, not the dog, which was the entire point. Our local humane societies/animal control of- ficers are trained to help with this, and then no animals are harmed or hurt. Open letter to Mayor Rick Bonnette, Town Council and the ASAP (Acton Sports Ac- tion Park) Committee, First of all a very hearty Congratulations, and a deep felt Thank You from the Parents of a couple Acton Skaters, on the opening of the Acton Skatepark facility. The 12,000+ sq. ft facility is one of the best in the region, and has satisfied beyond the dreams of our own 9- and 11-year-olds, both of whom have enjoyed endless hours at the park already. We realize that it was a long time coming in the planning, thought, and construction stages, over the last few years to make this happen, and the ASAP Committee have spearheaded a quality place for our kids to enjoy their hobby and sport. Thank you to all involved. By the immediate popular- ity of the park, with 40-60 kids on their bikes, blades and boards nightly, it has given a real shot of energy for the youth of Acton, as experienced skaters and bik- ers are helping the more inexperienced get better, sharpening their own skills, and something for them to do during the day and in the evenings. Better yet, some- thing constructive to do and a safe place to just hang out with friends. My kids have been skating for more than four years now, members at an Indoor Skate Club/facility in Guelph, and have been to 60+ skate parks in the US and Canada, and enjoyed dozens of parks in Southern Ontario, and this fast paced, well thought-out design, is amongst their fa- vourites now. They rank it in their Top 10 in Ontario easily. While not as large as the best parks in the Province, like Markham, or Mississauga, it is larger and better in qual- ity, than skateboard parks in Kitchener, Cambridge, Hamilton, Guelph, Burling- ton, Oakville, Brampton, Georgetown and Milton. Imagine, little old Acton, having a better, and cooler spot to skate at, than cities that are 10-25 times the size in population, to have such a place. It must be that small town heart and desire, as we already know Acton has. It was the dedication of vol- unteers and local youth that made this happen. Certainly something to be proud of, even more now than ever, for the little town that could. For the Town of Halton Hills Council and staff involved with Tourism Promotion, be sure to send in pictures, ad- dress/location, services and design features of the park to ww.concretepowder.com, a leading Skateboard Magazine and their Skatepark guide that is produced annually, as its a skaters bible to whats hot, new and where to go while out of town across Canada. Invite them out for a feature/photo session on the park for the 2008 guide this year, your local businesses will enjoy the extra influx of tourism. Fire calls A burn complaint from neighbours brought Acton firefighters to a residence on 32 Side Road in the Crewson Corners area 6:40 p.m. on Sunday. The homeowner did have the required burn permit, but was burning materials that were not permitted and the fire was extinguished. *** At 9:26 p.m., Acton fire- fighters doused a fire at a residence on the Sixth Line, north of 22 Side Road that was causing smoke com- plaints from neighbours. The homeowner was burn- ing in contravention of the burn permit and the fire was doused. To the editor, I am in the trucking in- dustry and comply with all the safety rules. I maintain my tractors and trailers and make sure they are not a hazard on the highways, Here is my concern. I was at a major truck parts supplier last week and noticed that they sell brake drums, with shoes for large vehicles for the unbelievable low price of $99.00. What a sale! The only thing wrong with them was that they were manufactured in China, which, in my opin- ion make them completely useless. Off shore parts are mostly inferior and these were espe- cially bad, The supplier said they were suitable for local in-town deliveries but they werent good for heavy loads or long distance travel. His response to my query about school was they should be alright. He didnt sound absolutely positive to me. Imagine school buses with them installed. There was no way that these brakes could withstand the weight and pressure on them to stop safely. They were selling like hotcakes to people who just didnt give a damn, (I did not purchase any). They would pass MTOs inspections and would pass safety inspections for certification, This fright- ens me. You response to my concerns would be greatly appreciated.
