Members of the Acton Horticultural Society are appalled at the desecration of their memorial to Max MacSween who did so much to advance gardening in Acton and area. We worked like h*** all summer in the park, said John Creasey, of the society, and this is the kind of thing thats makes you wonder why. Weve has all kinds of donations from people like R&M which did all the spade work in the park and over $3,000 of our money went into the park. But we still have t pay for the plaque and bench on the park, he noted. Police have turned the matter over to their crime unit for further investiga- tion. Halton police are asking the publics assistance in helping solve one of the latest cases of vandal- ism in Acton, which desecrated theMax MacSween Memorial Gardens sometime between midnight and 8a.m. on Tuesday August 7. By Rebecca Ring At least 30 homes in Guelph/Eramosa will be tested for lead in their water between December 2007 and April 2008, according to Manager of Public Works, Ken Gagnon. Mayor Chris White says the issue is not with the municipal water supply, but rather ensur- ing that water pipes inside private residences are not contaminated with lead. The sampling program is an initiative of Ontarios Ministry of Environment. Gagnon says the program is in its early development stages. Right now we are sifting through the regulations to develop a detailed plan. It appears that 20 residences in Rockwood and ten in Cross Creek will be tested, he says. Associated lab and operator costs are also being determined. White says it is a private property issue, mandated by the province onto the munici- pality. The province has not provided any funds for the program at this point, but it is new enough that there may be something in the works. It remains to be seen how this will shake out, how it will be funded, he says. Testing should occur every three years. What industry has flour- ished in Acton since 1828? See Page 4.
