Damage to property and theft from autos is typically the most frequently occurring crimes investigated by Halton Regional Police: this trend has continued into 2007. Although there has not been a substantial increase in the frequency of these occurrences, year-over-year, it continues to be a source of frustration to the general public and the police due to the senseless nature of the crime the cost of repair or replacement. A recent study of Halton Regional Police statistics found that the majority of damage to property and theft from autos in the Acton, Georgetown and Milton communities occurs typically between Friday and Sunday during the late evening and early morning hours. Typical crimes of mischief include graffi ti, broken windows, vehicle damage, smashing mail boxes and break- ing playground equipment. Motor vehicles are entered to obtain money, keys, wallets, purses, laptop computers and C.Ds. The dollar value of the mischief problem alone in North Halton over the last seven months has exceeded $150:000. To date, several individuals have been apprehended for theft and damage occurrences; however these crimes continue to be committed. The Halton Regional Police are asking for your help in providing suspect information and by taking steps to protect yourself against these property crimes. The following tips will help you reduce the change of becoming a victim of Damage to Property or theft: LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS :Individuals who enter vehicles looked for unlocked doors. If your vehicle is locked, suspects will usu- ally pass by. REMOVE VALUABLES FROM YOUR CAR. If your vehicle is locked, however items of value are in plain view, suspects will attack your vehicle and remove these items. Take all items of value out of your vehicle at the end of the day or lock these items in your trunk. PARKING YOUR VEHICLE When possible, keep your car parked in your drive-way and off of the roadway. Park your vehicle in your garage if it allows access for your vehicle. Park your vehicle in an area that is well lighted or by a motion censor. REPORT SUSPICIOUS PEOPLE AND SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY. Please report suspicious behaviour and people on your street immediately. Do not wait to call police. By calling police immediately, you increase the change of solving a crime if one has been committed. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR CAR IF YOUR HAVE BEEN VICTIMIZED. If you are victimized, please call police immediately and do not touch your car unless absolutely necessary. If you do need to handle your car, please do not touch items that were handle/moved by the person responsible for the crime. Such handling signifi cantly reduces the chance of recovering important evidence. All information given to the police directly can remain confi dential. As well, anyone can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222 TIPS: all information provided to this program is confi dential and a monetary reward might be paid for information leading to the arrest of indi- viduals responsible for committing crime. This damage and theft is a community problem that affects us all. Awareness to this problem and the help of the community to identify suspects should bring about a reduction of these crimes and make our community a safe place to live. If you would like to provide information about these (or any) crimes, please call the 11 Division Street Crime Unit at 905.878.5511 x 2106.
