Wellington OPP Auxiliary looking for volunteers By Rebecca Ring In July, Rockwoods brand new water tower replaced the older, smaller one, which was demolished. According to Public Works Manager Ken Gagnon, the entire project cost $2.1 million. The town- ship covered 23% of that, while development charges paid for the rest. The split was based on the water tower being undersized by 23% before new development. The old tower held 1360 cubic metres (360,000 US gallons) while the new tower holds 3000 cubic metres (800,000 US gallons). Gagnon says the project took six months and was conducted by Enviro-Con Engineering and Construc- tion Ltd., based in Guelph. There has been no problems with the new tower, he says. It is a demand system, which means the wells pump water into the distribution system to fi ll the water tower. As the level drops, pumps automati- cally turn on and pump more water in. As for the entire system, only rain can recharge the aquifer. Currently, the town- ship is under a Level 2 water ban, which means lawns can- not be watered and gardens can only be watered on al- ternate days, from 7 to 9am and 7 to 9 pm. At best, the township reaches Level 1, which means outside water use on alternate days with time restrictions, Gagnon says. A Level 3 means no outside water use at all. The township is a member of the Grand River Low Water Response team, spear- headed by the GRCA, which conferences every Wednes- day to discuss and address the condition of the watershed. Gagnon says that water use by-laws will be reviewed this fall, where the exemption permit process will be ques- tioned and possibly removed and enforcement may be improved.
