16 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2007 By Chuck Tysoe Many front-running teams have met the match on Ac- tons soccer fields over the years that league Cup finals have been hosted by the Acton Soccer Club. Some thrilling soccer has been played as bottom-dwell- ing, or otherwise ill-favored teams, found a way to pat it together for a championship win. Last year Caledon clawed their way from behind to stun undefeated, untied league champion Bolton Wanderers with a late second-half goal to take the Peel Halton Soc- cer Association Boys U-16 championship, 2-1. Sunday at Acton High School the teams met again; Caledon earning the champi- onship under very different circumstances. Last year a fatigued Bolton side and was unable to cope with the hardworking Caledon team. This time they authored their own misfortune, giving up a 2-0 lead and the game aban- doned by the referee with the score 2-2, only minutes from with The New Tanner SportsBolton leaves field in funk Caledon repeat champions 1151 Bronte Road, Oakville, Ontario L6M 3L1 Tel: 905-825-6000 Toll Free: 1-866-4HALTON TTY: 905-827-9833 www.halton.ca 300807 Labour Day Waste Collection Notice Please Note Collection Day Changes Due to the Labour Day Holiday, waste collection services the week of September 3 will take place the day after your regular collection day. The meltdown was begun after officials conferred for several minutes about an on-field scuffle. The restart was delayed by uncertainty about the spot of the ball, at which point Bolton fans and coaches began to verbally abuse and eventually physi- cally threaten game officials and the Bolton team left the field. It left the referee with no option but to end the game with Bolton having forfeiting the result. Good game Until that point, specta- tors had been treated to an intensely fought, well-played and entertaining soccer both committed to winning. Bolton opened the scoring early in the match, heading in a corner kick. Ten minutes into the second half, they scored again to put Caledon on the back foot. But Cale- don soon answered, a long goalkeeper clearance sending No. 18 into the clear. The same player scored again in the 25th minute, followed by a further almost 20 minutes of back-and-forth action in which neither team could break the tie. The ending was a bad show considering the qual- ity of soccer played by the eight teams involved over the weekend. The two Acton teams were unable to get by the round robin, leaving Caledon, both Bolton sides and Rockwood to fight out Sunday mornings semi-fi- nals. Both Bolton teams put on a good contest ending in a 3-1 score, and Caledon hand- ily getting by Rockwood 3-0. Actons Dennys Insurance boys played some of their best soccer of the season, and deserve credit for their hard work to end the season. The second Acton team, Ogre Sports, also deserve praise for their wonderful sportsmanship in the Sat- urdays final game, a close 4-3 win over Grand Valley in which the boys went out of their way to make the game a fun experience for both teams. On Friday, August 17, Pat Stirling a member of the Ladies League, had a hole in one on the par 3, 18th hole at Acton Golf North. This is her second hole in one her first at a dif- ferent golf course. The final round of the club championship was held on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Betty Kelly won A Flight, Dorothy Currie B Flight, Dawn Hammond. C Flight and Dianna Baker D Flight. Julie Conroy managed to get an Eagle on the par 4, 15th during the second round of the championship. Earlier this season, Annamarie Lowin and Sally McCoy had Eagles, one on a par 4 and the other on a par 5. Ladies league Hole-in-one at Acton Golf North TOO FAST AND FURIOUS: Flying tackle by a Caledon Defender shows the intensity of Sundays Peel Halton boys Under 16 soccer final. Game ended early at 2-2 due to spectator interference. Bolton forfeited the match.-Chuck Tysoe photo U-16 Boys soccer
