Continued on page 16 with Mike OLeary The Way I See It I cant believe its fair time again. This years edi- tion, our 94th annual, starts tomorrow (Friday, Septem- ber 14) and runs through to Sunday. Acton has wel- comed many new residents the past few years and I especially encourage them to attend our fair. Then you too will realize, as long time residents have known for years, that the Acton Fair has earned its reputation as one of the best little fairs in Ontario. Friday, from 10a.m. to 3p.m. is education day. This popular event gives our young school children an opportunity to see the exhib- its, have lunch and a hayride while the park is closed to other attendees. I hasten to add that pre-school children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Seniors are also welcome to attend Education Day. Education Day is a great opportunity for our children to get a sense of Actons agricultural roots. The rides and midway games will not be open. Theres lots to see and do though, and the chil- dren have a ball. Ken Jens Petting Zoo should be in full operation. At 4p.m. the gates open but please note the midway rides usually dont start until around 6p.m. Friday evening we have the heavy horse pull, all the exhibits and, of course, the Miss Acton Fall Fair Pageant. This year we have a brand new addition to our fair. Af- ter years of waiting the new Acton Agricultural Society indoor sports field is open for business. Come and see our 21,600 square foot indoor sports field. Our field has the newest style of indoor turf. Already, most of the prime time hours have been booked by Acton and Georgetown soccer clubs. In addition, we will be hosting, lacrosse, badminton and other field sports this winter. The Ag. Society building is a perfect example of a public/private partnership. Although the building is located on public lands it is owned and operated by the Acton Agricultural Society. However, this project would not have happened without the backing, both financial and technical, of the whole Halton Hills council and staff. Before we get too far into the jam-packed schedule of events a word about park- ing. Its going to be in short supply this year. We will always have room for hand- icapped parking for those who have the appropriate identification on the car. We will try to accommodate any seniors with mobility problems if you speak to the nice people at the front gate. All others, please walk to the fair or look for off-site parking. Tyler Transport will be running its shuttle bus be- tween the fairgrounds and the legion parking lot Satur- day and Sunday. There are two free public parking lots just off Mill St., one block east of Main. From there its just a short walk to the fairgrounds. Saturday will be an action packed day. The midway will be roaring, beef cattle, Jr. 4-H show, western horse show, and many other ac- tivities make for a busy morning. At noon the an- nual parade will start at McKenzie-Smith School and proceed down Mill St. to the fair. P l e a s e no t e : The r e are huge lineups at the roundhouse immediately following the parade. Chaos would be an understate- ment. Children and infants are everywhere. For safetys sake, no vehicles will be al- lowed down Knox or along Park from Mill for about 45 mins. after the parade reaches the fair. There will be a special baby gate open right after the parade. Regular fairgoers know that its wise to purchase your entry ticket before the parade reaches the fair- grounds. Actually, the best deal for admissions is a three day pass. Each stub is good for one admission for one day. But, if for instance, you only want to attend the Miss Acton Pageant Friday night, other members of your family can use the Saturday or Sunday coupon. Of course, we hope you will attend all three days. A 3 day pass, available at local banks and the front gate, saves you 1/3 the cost of regular 3-day admissions. Back to the program. Saturday afternoon and evening we present more horse shows, highway truck pulls and garden tractor pulls in the evening. Our featured entertainment Sat- urday night features 3 Elvis impersonators, all winners from the Collingwood Elvis Festival. The show starts at 8 p.m. Sunday the gates open at 8a.m. but the midway gears up closer to noon.
