20 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2007 To the editor, To the residents of Acton and Area I express sincere gratitude for your generosity in donating $33,083.71 to the Canadian Cancer Society through our residential campaign this past April. Special thanks are also extended to our wonderful volunteer canvassers who walked streets and drove roads to knock at your doors. Only with the combined efforts of canvassers and contributors could we have been so successful. In response to a frequently asked question, How is the money spent? I assure you, it is used first and foremost to provide local services transportation of cancer patients to treatment centres, lodge costs for in-treatment patients, wigs and hats, information and education programs and a Unit Office in Guelph to respond to requests (only CCS maintains a local office). Any remaining monies are allotted to ongoing, approved research as we attempt to eliminate this dreaded disease from society. During the past ten years, tremendous strides have been made in the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer. Through our united efforts we shall make cancer history. Sincerely, Carl Leybourne, Wellington County/Acton Unit President, CCS & Liz Bailey Acton Branch A few years ago, many of you may recall our Town was faced with a real crisis with respect to our hospital. We had people throughout our community of Halton Hills up in arms. We won a huge victory. Since then, our hospital has been renamed Georgetown Hospital instead of a campus. It is now part of Halton Healthcare which is connected to the Milton and Oakville Hospitals. The purpose of me telling you this is to tell you about a hard working group in our community who has been there through thick and thin working for our hospital. This local citizen group is the Georgetown Hospital Foun- dation. So far this year they have raised over $100,000. With new obstetricians re- cruited for the hospital this year, additional gynecologi- cal equipment is required to meet the growing number of births we can expect in the coming months. They still have a long way to go because a lot of the equipment is not funded by the Ministry of Health. It will be up to our community to fund these tools for our hometown hospital. Please consider donations to the Georgetown Hospital Foun- dation. * * * * Speaking of donations, Georgetown Canadian Tire donated $50,000 for newborn and family care at our hospi- tal. Way to go! * * * * Hey, do you want to win a car and still support our hospital? By purchasing a ticket for $10 you can have a chance to win a Toyota Yaris, courtesy of Georgetown Toy- ota. Tickets are on sale at the Georgetown Market Place Mall. You may also purchase tickets this weekend at the Acton Fall Fair. The draw is to be held Sunday, September 16. Time is running out. * * * * There is no shortage of yellow jackets (bees) this time of year. That means summer is over and it is Fall Fair season. A special thanks to all our volunteers involved with both the Georgetown and Acton Fall Fairs. * * * * On September 8th, Coun- cillor Clark Somerville and I went to a neighbourhood working bee. The neighbours in the Danville-Wallace area of Acton got together with their kids and constructed bird houses, as well as plant- ed trees and shrubs along the trail. This was excellent community spirit, and what makes our small town so great. * * * * In the Oops Department, I made a big goof. In my last column, I mentioned that the Georgetown Soccer Asso- ciation, in conjunction with the Georgetown Baseball Association, donated over $5,000 for improvements to Diamond No. 1 in the Gel- lert Community Park. My sincere apologies, it was the Georgetown Slo Pitch League who participated with the Georgetown Baseball As- sociation. * * * * On behalf of Council, I welcome the following new business to Georgetown: Main Street Perk. * * * * Keeping it real! I can be reached by telephone at 905- 873-2601, ext. 2342, or by e-mail at mayor@haltonhills. ca. At a special board meet- ing August 28, trustees of the Halton Catholic District School board received and approved with regret the Letter of Resignation of Al Bailey as the Chair of the Board and as Trustee for Bur- lington Wards 1 and 2. Bailey was originally elect- ed as the Burlington Wards 1 and 2 Trustee to the Halton Catholic District School Board in November, 1997, a position which he has held continuously for nine and a half years to the present. He has also served as the Chair of the Board since December, 2000. Current Vice-Chair of the Board and veteran Oakville Trustee, Alice Anne LeMay assumed the role of Board Chair on September 1.
