Aggressive, commercial truck drivers on 401 targeted by OPP Operation Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped 1,200 vehicles and laid 385 charges in the 24- hour province-wide initiative targetting. The campaign began at 6 a.m. Saturday along Highway 401 from Windsor to the Que- bec border and on Highway 11/17 in northern Ontario. The OPP used aircraft surveillance in eastern and western sections of the province to support per- sonnel and resources on the ground. There were two crashes in- volving commercial vehicles resulting into two fatalities during Operation Corridor. In addition, offi cers laid 188 speeding charges, 73 seat- belt charges, 62 equipment charges, 25 following too close charges and six charges for failing to move to the left where a cruiser was stopped on the side of the road with its emergency lights fl ashing. To date in September, there have been 25 motor vehicle crashes, resulting in 30 fa- talities. Commercial vehicles have been involved in 12 of those crashes. Overall, 332 people have been killed on roads the OPP patrols this year, 18 more than 2006. There are still too many incidents where drivers dont seem to be getting the mes- sage, OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino said. In one instance on Highway 403 yes- terday, a tractor trailer passed two cruisers. Not only was it speeding, it failed to move into the left lane as it went past. When he was stopped, offi cers discovered numerous document issues, as well. There have been 12 people have been killed in crashes in- volving tractor trailers already this month. Thats totally unacceptable, Fantino said. While the truck driver wasnt at fault in every case, we have seen far too many incidences where truckers are driving aggressively, following too closely or speeding. Although commercial ve- hicles were targetted, offi cers also stopped three motorists going in excess of 150 kilo- metres per hour, including one woman who was stopped at 5:54 p.m. and ticketed for doing 172 kph in a 100 kph zone, twenty minutes later she was stopped again for going 135 kph in a 100 kph zone. In another case, a westbound driver was charged at 129 kph at 7:45 a.m. and at 136 kph an hour later.
