Happy 65th Eldon Love Karen, Bob, Heather and Stephen, and families While most denominations no longer support a church rectory or manse, St. Josephs Church in Acton will start building a new parish rectory at the north west corner of Church and Elgin Streets on Monday, Oct. 1. The present brick house on the corner will be demolished and a new 2200 square foot green rectory will be constructed on the site. The parish received permission from the Towns Committee of Adjustment to enlarge footprint for the building, a project headed by St. Josephs Knights of Co- lumbus celebrating 25 years in Acton. Albert Cote, a builder, an architec- tural technologist and veteran of in property management for the provincial government, is the project manager. He heads a building committee consisting of Knights Bruce Lampkin, Gary De- Green rectory for St. Josephs Bruyn, Don Milton, and Chris Elgar as well as Lois Nelles, a parish member, who is also an architectural technologist. The rectory will be built by Rockhaven Homes; a choice Cote says was made after careful consideration of several builders. The new building will be constructed us- ing a system consisting of insulated foam panels, which are lighter and offer energy savings as well as sound abatement. Cote points out that nearly 40 percent of new homes in the U.S. are constructed with solid wall panels with a solid core of insulation. They offer a much higher degree of insulation than the traditional 2X6 stud framing, he says. The panels, 20 ft. long and 10 ft. high are shipped to the housing site and erected by a crane truck, then stitched together by carpenters. Then carpenters cut out openings for doors and windows. Cote told The New Tanner the old rectory at the end of John St. will eventually be demolished because of its condition, necessitating so many repairs. The house on Church St. being demolished, owned by the par- ish, is also in bad shape. The task of renovating it would have cost more than a new home. Planning for a new rectory began in 2005 when the present rectory was considered beyond reasonable repair. It was purchased during the 10-year pastorship of Rev. Father Feeney who came to St. Josephs in 1898 and was transferred in 1908. According to Actons Early Days, the home was built by a prominent Acton builder, Eli Snyder, for a Wil- liam Ismond. It was the first brick house on the block. The AERC hosted a One- Year Anniversary Open House on Wednesday, Sep- tember 26 from 1 to 4 pm at its 45 Mill Street location.
