The team has a number of players converting from their tradi- tional roles as forwards to become defencemen and the opening game against Bramp- ton was their first test. Only solid goaltending from the Brampton netminder kept the Tanners off the scoresheet in their first shift. Goaltender Braidyn Vidler was excellent in net, denying the Battalion attackers with his agile pad play and covering up any re- bounds with his trapper. In the sixth minute of play Acton was first on the board as David Lafrance converted a heads-up pass from Michael Kri, putting the puck high over the goaltenders shoulder. The Brampton squad answered back in the last minute of the opening frame, making it a 1-1 tie. The score remained tied through the second period despite excellent play from both teams. Defenceman Liam OConnell made some well-timed hits to break up a number of attacks. Jordan Clarke was a stalwart on de- fence as he calmly took control in his own end and used his speed and passing to fire up the offence. Ian Engstrom played a strong positional game on defence and did a fine job keeping the Battalion players away from his goaltender. In the third period the home team came out firing and took the lead three minutes in on a nifty move to the backhand that Vidler had almost stopped but trickled in. Eleven sec- onds later the Battalion took a 3-1 lead. The Tanners showing gritty competitiveness, howev- er, saw Travis Baker spotting forward Cody Arney at centre ice. Arney made a nifty move on the first defenceman and a second move to bring the puck to his forehand and fired a highlight reel goal to the top corner, reducing the deficit to one goal. Less than a minute later, Jason Goodfellow and David Lafrance worked some nice passing with Michael Kri who tied the game up at 3-3. Thirty seconds later the Tanners stormed in again as Goodfel- low found Molinaro who fired a shot and Kevin Giordano fired home the rebound to put the Tanners up once again. Just over a minute later forwards Michael Kri, Theo Warren and David Lafrance worked magic in the Battal- ion end, cycling the puck low until Lafrance found the puck behind the goal and scored his second of the night on a wraparound to put the Tan- ners up 5-3. Acton ran into some penalty trouble later in the frame and gave up a powerplay goal to Brampton with just over three minutes remaining but controlled play in the dying seconds to secure their first victory of the season by a score of 5-4. Coach Derrick McIntyre commented after the game that this team will be competitive at the BB level and was im- pressed that they never gave up when down by two goals in the final period. Atom BB Tanners open season with Brampton win Halton high schools can be- gin applying for $1,000 grants for prevention and cessation activities that support tobacco- free living. The high school grant program provides a terrific opportunity for Halton schools to engage youth in leadership activities that will positively influence the school environ- ment, and ultimately the health of Halton youth, said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Regions Medical Officer of Health. Based on the success of last years program, the Ministry of Health Promotion is offer- ing the program again. The program, has been run- ning for three consecutive years, with a total of $31,000 available for 2007/08. Projects may include public education and awareness events and smoking cessation related activities. All high schools in Halton are eligible to apply for a $1,000 grant and applicants can include student groups, teachers and parent organiza- tions. Applications are due October 22.
