The alarm will be similar to a fire alarm, only the students will be instructed to carry their days garbage with them to the back field, where they will assemble and see their collective waste displayed. The goal is for students and staff to learn about the im- portance of waste reduction. Classes will be challenged to compete for the coveted golden garbage pail award and students will be invited to join the environmental club that will start the fol- lowing day. The event will launch a school-wide waste reduction program and the environmental club for stu- dents. It takes place Monday, Oct. 15 at 1:45 p.m. The program was initiated by two mothers concerned about the environment who wanted to help kids take actions and feel more empowered in the face of climate change. They have since been joined by many more parents. Committee chairperson Janet Johnson says, The garbage created by the simple act of pack- ing a lunch when multiplied by hundreds of students is enormous. Likewise, lots of us making this simple change will have an equally big impact. Libby Little, co-organizer of the initiative, says, For me it started when my son came home from school last spring, certain that the world would end in ten years based on what he had heard on the playground about global warming. I wanted to find real actions that kids could take that would make a difference, and a school club seemed a great place to start. The program has the sup- port of school staff. Principal Leslie Newman says, Lead- ership on environmental issues has to start somewhere, and Im delighted to see that in this case its parents and students who are showing us the way forward. They also have the support of Guelph/Eramosa Township as its Environmental Stew- ardship Committee donated $1,000 towards implement- ing the program and funding the clubs activities for the year. Little says that the impact this program can have on the schools 600 students and their families is enormous. According to Statistics Canada, Canadians produce over 970kg of solid waste per person each year, 383kg of which comes from house- hold garbage, the equivalent of 30 green garbage bags per person. Solid waste is a ma- jor source of both methane gas and carbon dioxide, two of the gases that contribute to global warming. Rockwood came out in droves to help Ontario break the Guinness World Re - cord for the greatest number of people walking one kilometre simultaneously, currently held by Western Australia (100,915). In Wellington County, 24,551 people walked with 656 of those in Rockwood. Well find out if it beat the record after October 12. Guelph/Eramosa Town- ship will be adding three new flags to the Rockwood Cenotaph: the Union Flag, the Canadian Forces Ensign, and the Red Ensign. A dedication ceremony will occur on Saturday, Oc- tober 20 at 10a.m. First flown in Canada in 1610, the Union Flag or Royal Union Flag was the flag Canadian troops fought under during the First World War. The Unified Canadian Forces Ensign or White En- sign was introduced in 1968 to identify the Canadian Armed Services as a whole. The Canadian Red En- sign was used on land and sea as Canadas first flag. One version of the Red En- sign was carried by Canadian soldiers during the battle of Vimy Ridge.
