THE NEW TANNERTHURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2007 9THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 20078 Old home comes down PRESENTATION: Always good for our community! Lo- cal Rotarians Emrys Jenkins and Ed Lawson presented St. Joseph Grade Three Classes with new dictionaries recently. Grateful recipients are Erica English and Curtis Bee. submitted photo New house on schedule by Matthew Reid One day it was there and the next it was com- pletely gone, said one Acton woman after she passed the site at the north-east corner of Church and Elgin Sts. where a century old home was demolished to provide a new parish house for St. Josephs Catholic parish in Acton. The older red brick home was torn down by Sand- erson Construction Ltd. Construction on the new green house is well under- way, says project supervisor Albert Cote of St. Josephs Knights of Columbus, which has made it a 25th anniver- sary project. Cote said Glenn Sanderson demolished the old home with the accuracy of a surgeon during a delicate operation. All the scrap metal was removed and placed in a pile to be recycled. A local resi- dent was given permission to remove the metal but he was shown on a time-lapse camera system also remov- ing the builders extension cord. It was retrieved. The structural insulated panels for the new house, known as SIPs, supplied by Mur-Pan Industries are being added to the foun- dation, which was poured there weeks ago. Windows and doors in the panels are already cut out. Rockhaven Homes, added the panels this week. When the roof is finished the building will be completely enclosed. The new parish home is unique in the use of the Structural Insulated Panels. They consist of orient-strand board (OSB) structurally laminated to a core of ex- panded polystyrene (EPS) insulation. The system is touted to provide long term energy cost savings and add value to the house, as well as costing nearly the same as other building materials. When the house is com- pleted, St. Josephs old rectory on John St. will be demolished as part of the parishs plans for the future. It was built around 1900.
